The man is standing next to penn.

I feel like their is only 10 actors in korea. we want new faces. He is such a good actor. I wish they still made music video like this. Oh Gong Yoo. how much I missed you! I admire you for taking roles that are hard hitting and difficult. You are my ultimate actor. Love you! 😍. I've been an Arctic Monkeys fan for a while now and I recently found out about Miles Kane and started listening to his music. When I found out about The Last Shadow Puppets I thought it would be a heck of a coincidence to have some of my favourite artists playing togheder incredible music. Lee byung hun's acting only the best one. Where to watch the full movie. 😭.

The man standing next us.

The man standing next review. Eon thanks for notif. 🙌🏼. The Last Shadow Puppets could make a really good Bond song. I hope one day they'll be able to. We often talk about the joys of motherhood. But how often does one lose one's self in the process.

이병헌은 정말 매 역할마다 다른사람인게 느껴지는 배우인듯

The man standing next movie. The real couple in movie n real life. THEY'RE BACK. :DDDD. 0:41 레알 박정희인줄.

This movie fricking destroyed me, dude. Watch stream tenki no ko watch. I'm interested in this movie because of shinkai's previous works, and I think considering his last movie's success, many people also feels that way, so it's very hard to not comparing shinkai's next work with "your name. I'll start with the animation and visualization in this anime, it's better than "your name" and it captures the metropolitan culture of tokyo's Japanese people very well, though i miss the depiction of japan traditional culture and rural area in this movie. About the music, they have similar aura with "your name" moving moments in the movie are captured brilliantly with the music. Storywise though, your name" was a better love story than this movie, and "your name" made more sense than this movie. It is still a very good movie though, but I think it won't top "your name" success... I hope shinkai will make many more good movie after this, and with this much of quality, I think many people would still want to watch his future projects... I know I would.

After reading the book, I hope this doesn't end the same way... This year I went to see 192 different movies in theaters, plus one rewatch. That's up from 162 in 2018, 140 in 2017, 9 in 2016, and 5 in 2015. I usually go 3 or 4 times per week, mostly on weekends. I keep track of dates/theaters/movies/ratings for fun and save all of the stubs. My ratings are what I give the movie right after seeing it, with no real 'checklist' or anything, mostly just initial thought/enjoyment/opinion. It's not meant to be taken super seriously, I'm not a professional reviewer. This is my full ranking for the year, from favorite to least-favorite, with a few small reviews/thoughts thrown in: Monos - 10/10 - Hands-down my favorite movie of the year and honestly high on my all-time list. It's Apocalypse Now meets Lord of the Flies, with some Beasts of No Nation thrown in. It builds a unique, lived-in world that's believable and brutal. Beautifully-filmed, some of the best shots of the year (the ending shot gets seared in your mind). Modern and grounded look at a militia/cartel fighting against an unnamed enemy in a Colombian jungle. It almost feels post-apocalyptic instead of 'cartel vs government', which I really loved. You get to imagine your own backstory as the story unfolds. Unforgiving and gut-wrenching, but hopeful too. Got a lot out of its cast. Can't recommend this movie enough. Really disappointed this didn't make the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist. "Masterpiece" gets thrown around a lot, but in my mind this is the only one this year. Marriage Story - 10/10 The Farewell - 10/10 Journey to a Mother's Room - 9/10 - Biggest surprise of the year, came out of nowhere. Deeply-personal story between a mother & daughter. It's very basic on the surface, and there's not much story (you start at Point A, and end at Point A), but it's the most emotional movie of the year. If you don't cry at least 3 times during this, you're probably not human. It's all about the unbreakable connection you have to your parent(s), from the day you're born until the day you die. It only takes place over the course of a few months, but feels like lifetimes. Beautiful little movie about separation, loss, and human connection. Waves - 9/10 - I could write 20 pages on how much I loved this movie. To keep it short, it's got a perfect soundtrack, perfect setting, awards-worthy performances (from Kelvin Harrison Jr., Sterling K. Brown, and Taylor Russell). Visceral story that grips you from the first minute and doesn't let go until the closing shot. Unique use of colors and aspect-ratio. It takes a huge risk structurally that pays off. It's also the only movie I went to see twice this year. Really worth it too, picked up on a lot of stuff on the second viewing. Would've went a third time if theaters kept it playing longer. Every tiny decision/action has a huge impact. Just watch this. Last Black Man In San Francisco - 9/10 Birds of Passage - 9/10 Apollo 11 - 9/10 - The best documentary of the year. Probably the best editing (and use of sound) I've ever seen/heard in a documentary. It's unique because they don't use interviews like most documentaries do, it's real sound the whole through. Impressive use of archival footage/audio. Uncut Gems - 9/10 - This movie wasn't on the Best Original Score shortlist for the 2020 Oscars. This aggression will not stand. The Mustang - 9/10 Wild Rose - 9/10 - If this doesn't win the Oscar for Best Original Song ('Glasgow'), I've lost all faith in the Academy. The ending concert scene had me crying like a baby. Jessie Buckley is gonna be big. Best music-drama since A Star Is Born. Transit - 9/10 Ad Astra - 9/10 - Top-notch acting, great atmosphere, world-building, existentialism, beautiful VFX, engaging score. Best opening scene of the year. Thoughtful commentary on modern society all wrapped in a Heart of Darkness blanket. If you're into space/exploration movies, then I recommend this. Surprised at the backlash this movie has gotten on r/movies. The Report - 9/10 - This was a really good year for legal-thrillers and The Report was the cream of the crop. Tight, Sorkin-like script with top performances from Adam Driver & Annette Bening. Could change a lot of minds about the war on terror and use of torture. Parasite - 9/10 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 9/10 Midnight Traveler - 9/10 - If you feel like life is unfair and the odds are stacked against you, watch this movie. It puts everything in a different perspective. Every problem you have is going to seem minuscule compared to what this family went through. It's eye-opening and should fill you with anger. Luce - 9/10 - It's Kelvin Harrison Jr's world and we're just living in it. The Irishman - 8/10 Mickey and the Bear - 8/10 - Camila Morrone puts in the best breakout performance of the year. PTSD, drug-addiction, alcoholism, rural Montana, toxic relationships, James Badge Dale, following your dreams. What's not to love? The Art of Self Defense - 8/10 - The best dark-comedy of the year. So many great one liners. It's like Yorgos Lanthimos directing Death of Stalin, set in a karate studio. Surprisingly violent and depressing, but in all the right ways. Jesse Eisenberg's best movie Social Network? Peanut Butter Falcon - 8/10 - "Am I going to die? " "We all do, it's only a matter of time, now stop being a little bitch. " - Favorite line of the year, really stuck with me. Everybody Knows - 8/10 Mary Magdalene - 8/10 Knives Out - 8/10 - Well-crafted whoddunit with an ensemble cast. Just a genuinely fun time at the movies. Ana de Armas with well-deserved leading role for once. A few of the characters are a tad bit unrealistic (and basically caricatures), but the movie doesn't take itself seriously enough for that to be a problem. Daniel Craig hamming it up with a Southern accent was fun. Old school film with a modern twist. The Lighthouse - 8/10 The Dead Don't Die - 8/10 - This movie really isn't for everyone, but I loved the dry humor and purposefully-bad chemistry/dialogue. The line delivery was off-putting but hilarious. Everything is extremely on-the-nose and it works. I could watch 10 hours of Tom Waits talking to himself. Us - 8/10 Villains - 8/10 Ford v Ferrari - 8/10 Midsommar - 8/10 Jojo Rabbit - 8/10 Official Secrets - 8/10 - Keira Knightley with one of the most underrated performances of the year. Another really good legal/political-thriller that exposes the dark side of government bureaucracy. Pain & Glory - 8/10 John Wick 3: Parabellum - 8/10 Queen & Slim - 8/10 Amazing Grace - 8/10 - Great concert-documentary. Some of Aretha Franklin's performances in this should give you insane chills. I actually had this one rated higher right after watching it, but then looked up some of the people shown on screen and it turns out some were real pieces of shit, while preaching to people like hypocrits. Felt gross and took a lot of the magic out. One of my few revised scores this year. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood - 8/10 Joker - 8/10 Non-Fiction - 8/10 - It's very French (talky and sexual) and the writing seems impressed with itself, but it's a good adult-drama that surprised me. I'm a big fan of Olivier Assayas and this is some of his best work. Rocketman - 8/10 Stan & Ollie - 8/10 Hustlers - 8/10 Avengers Endgame - 8/10 Doctor Sleep - 8/10 - It gets bloated and probably needed to be 20-30 minutes shorter (there's a shit ton of side-characters), but it was a worthwhile sequel to The Shining. Didn't feel like a cash grab and carries its own weight. Booksmart - 8/10 Little Monsters - 8/10 - I'd recommend watching this based just on Josh Gad's character. So over-the-top and hilarious. When he starts chugging hand sanitizer might be the most I laughed in a theater this year. Also Lupita Nyong'o playing & singing on the ukulele to a bunch of kids is exactly what I needed in my life. Cute zombie-comedy with a ton of heart. Spider-Man: Far From Home - 8/10 A Hidden Life - 8/10 - If there's a song from this year (or this decade even) that I'd want played at my funeral, it's James Newton Howard's theme from this movie. It's so beautiful and perfectly captures the feel of the movie. That song broke me down every time it played. I can't imagine this movie without it, it's that good. It's a shame this movie is getting ignored this awards season. Never Look Away - 8/10 Toy Story 4 - 8/10 Pavarotti - 8/10 The Biggest Little Farm - 8/10 - If you're really into the inner-workings of a Californian farm, then this is the documentary for you. Abominable - 8/10 The Current War - 7/10 Artic - 7/10 - Well made, solidly-acted. I loved the small details about survival that this movie brings up, makes it very grounded and realistic. I'm kinda bored of survival movies in general so this didn't blow my mind or anything. Bombshell - 7/10 Honey Boy - 7/10 - Pretty big letdown because I had really high expectations for this one. Lacked the emotional punch I hoped for. Didn't land for me at all, kind of like Boy Erased last year. I appreciate how honest and revealing it was, took a lot of guts for Shia LaBeouf to put this out there but it's forgettable. Lucas Hedges' Shia impression was reallllly on point though, that was worth the price of admission right there. Mid90s last year was a 10/10 for me and I expected the same for this. It was good, not great. American Woman - 7/10 - Sienna Miller's performance in this is awards-worthy. The accent she does is perfect and it might be the most underrated role of the year. The movie gets way too tearjerky at the end though. It's basically 2 hours of bad shit happening to a good person, which gets a bit overwhelming. The Beach Bum - 7/10 Captain Marvel - 7/10 Spies In Disguise - 7/10 - Looked pretty generic based on the trailer, but was actually pretty funny. Cold Pursuit - 7/10 Tolkien - 7/10 - Not much happens but it felt really comfortable. Solid performances all around and they handled the WW1 scenes better than I thought they would. Expected to be bored out of my mind based on the reviews and trailer but it flowed well. As far as "Nicholas Hoult Biopics of Famous Writers" go, it's miles ahead of Rebel in the Rye 2 years ago. Jumanji: The Next Level - 7/10 Sauvage/Wild - 7/10 Detective Pikachu - 7/10 Maiden - 7/10 Dark Waters - 7/10 -. Good performances and an okay script, even though it beats you over the head sometimes. Total waste of Anne Hathaway. She's way too good of an actress for a boring, generic, 'supporting wife' role with just a few lines. Not even sure why she was in this. Overall, a solid legal-thriller, which is a genre I really enjoy and I've been missing since its late-90s heyday. Pretty crazy story too, scummy and evil corporate greed is always interesting to explore on film (like The Insider). Should've been 20 minutes shorter and less on-the-nose Adopt A Highway - 7/10 The Wedding Guest - 7/10 The Hummingbird Project - 7/10 Motherless Brooklyn - 7/10 The Lion King - 7/10 Last Christmas - 7/10 - It's really easy to bash this movie, a lot of the humor falls flat and the twist is ridiculous, but I couldn't help walking out with a smile. I love how committed Emilia Clarke was to the character, and her interactions with her boss and family were legitimately heart-warming at times. Also did I mention how ridiculous that twist is? Richard Jewell - 7/10 - This was decent. Even though it's clearly Clint Eastwood's personal crusade (and thinly-veiled propaganda piece in some regards) against the FBI & the Spooky Media™, it still told the story effectively/semi-believably. Some of the characters (Hamm/Wilde obviously) were pretty ridiculous caricatures though, was hard to take anything they said seriously, I mean come on. You just roll your eyes at most of what they say. Some of the situations and encounters are too-conveniently set-up but that's easy to overlook. It had very solid performances (Hauser was great, especially when he finally let's his emotion show, in that scene where he kicks the table). Much better than The Mule, and 20x better than 15:17 To Paris. Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - 7/10 21 Bridges - 7/10 Before You Know It - 7/10 Hobbs & Shaw - 7/10 - This is peak "Stupid Summer Popcorn Movie" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's The Meg of 2019. Fighting With My Family - 7/10 Pet Sematary - 7/10 Downton Abbey - 7/10 - Never saw a single episode of the show before watching the movie, but it still felt familiar/safe to jump right in. Yesterday - 7/10 Greta - 7/10 - It's a cheesy, predictable, non-scary horror film but I liked it. Sometimes you just need Isabelle Hupert to play a psychopathic serial killer. Felt very old-school, a movie straight out of the 1980s. Judy - 7/10 - It's the definition of Oscar bait and is emotionally manipulative, especially towards the end, but it does a great job at humanizing a Hollywood legend. Frozen 2 - 7/10 Aladdin - 7/10 The Souvenir - 7/10 Zombieland 2: Double Tap - 7/10 - Nowhere near as memorable/iconic as the first one, but it still got a bunch of laughs from me (especially the Thomas Middleditch/Luke Wilson scene). Above-average for a comedy-sequel, but I could see this one not aging well. The Two Popes - 6/10 - Two solid performances but underwhelming overall, too many cheap-looking flashback scenes, not enough Pryce/Hopkins. Reminded me of Can You Ever Forgive Me? last year, depending on the 2 leads to carry a weak movie/premise on their back, to disappointing results. Highly-overrated movie. Ready Or Not - 6/10 Anna - 6/10 - It's basically Red Sparrow but slightly worse. Saint Frances - 6/10 Hotel Mumbai - 6/10 Shazam! - 6/10 - Low-stakes, formulaic, superhero movie clearly made with strict budget limitations. It hits all the notes you'd expect a movie like this to hit. It was decent. Alita: Battle Angel - 6/10 Loro - 6/10 - One of the more disappointing movies of the year. On paper it sounds amazing, a sprawling biopic of an infamous/corrupt Italian politician/mogul by Paolo Sorrentino who's not that far removed from a masterpiece? Sign me the fuck up. But nah, this was a shallow, surface-level (like my reviews), pointless dull knife of a biopic. Too much shoehorned religious imagery too. Tone is all over the place. It can't decide whether it's serious or funny and gets lost in-between. It looked nice at least. It also wins this year's "Most Nudity" award, easily beating the rest of the field. Teen Spirit - 6/10 The Upside - 6/10 Gloria Bell - 6/10 - Great performance from Julianne Moore but this just felt like "Middle-Aged Crisis: The Movie". Just couldn't connect to it. I imagine the original is a lot better. On The Basis Of Sex - 6/10 Stockholm - 6/10 Give Me Liberty - 6/10 - This is an example of a movie that has its heart in the right place but bites off a lot more than it can chew. There's a beautiful, emotional story in here somewhere, but it's too muddled with ineffective editing tricks and too many side-stories. It's sweet in some ways and the true-life characters bring a lot of charm, but it didn't do that much for me. A lot of 'year-end' lists have this as one of the most overlooked movies of the year, but I don't see it. Rough editing, bad soundtrack. Child's Play - 6/10 Good Boys - 6/10 - Just watch Booksmart instead. Styx - 6/10 Woman at War - 6/10 The Lego Movie 2 - 6/10 Missing Link - 6/10 Long Shot - 6/10 - The chemistry between Charlize Theron & Seth Rogen was great but the jokes couldn't really match it. It's a unique mix of politics & humor, but fell short of being an actual crowd-pleaser. Echo in the Canyon - 6/10 Cyrano, My Love - 6/10 Dora the Explorer - 6/10 Brittany Runs A Marathon - 6/10 IT: Chapter 2 - 6/10 - Way too long. Felt like a never-ending series of fetch-quests. Good CGI & acting though. Mister America - 6/10 Crawl - 6/10 Trial By Fire - 6/10 - Great performances by Laura Dern & Jack O'Connell get overshadowed by an overly-preacy script. It doesn't let the audience make up its own mind. The Third Wife - 6/10 Godzilla: King of Monsters - 5/10 - This needed less humans, more monsters. Glass - 5/10 Escape Room - 5/10 Terminator: Dark Fate - 5/10 Dumbo - 5/10 All Is True - 5/10 Brightburn - 5/10 The White Crow - 5/10 - One of those biopics where the movie doesn't do justice to the story. Reading the Wikipedia page on this guy's life, you'd except an Oscar contender. Instead it was just okay. Watch Cold War instead. It's basically this movie but better. High Life - 5/10 - Unpleasant. Where'd You Go Bernadette? - 5/10 Scary Stories to Tell Dark - 5/10 Her Smell - 5/10 - This movie made me physically nauseous. The tight, claustrophobic, haze-filled shots in the first 2 acts really threw me off. It's temporarily redeemed by a reallllllly good third act and a solid performance from Elisabeth Moss. But then deflated by a terrible final scene. By the Grace of God - 5/10 - Based on the critical acclaim, director, and subject matter, I walked in expected to be blown away. Basically expected Spotlight, but this movie completely derails at the halfway point. Hard to sit through. Blinded by the Light - 5/10 The Best of Enemies - 5/10 The Aeronauts - 5/10 - This is mis-marketed as an intense survival story but it's really just a boring biopic with too many flashbacks. Fall of the American Empire - 5/10 Family - 5/10 The Goldfinch - 5/10 - It turns out an unfilmable novel really is unfilmbable, who would've thought? Shoutout to Jeffrey Wright & Finn Wolfhard for actually trying. Angel Has Fallen - 5/10 Gemini Man - 5/10 Late Night - 5/10 Black and Blue - 5/10 Diane - 5/10 - This was just depression-porn. Sometimes it works (Mungiu/Zvyagintsev), sometimes it doesn't (this movie). It's such a bummer. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone but Mary Kay Place's performance makes it watchable and engaging sometimes. Destroyer - 5/10 How To Train Your Dragon 3 - 5/10 Rafiki - 5/10 - I feel bad for this score because I get that this is a really important/significant movie for African Cinema, but I just couldn't get past the terrible acting, bad (like baaaaaad) dialogue, and lackluster story. Again, pretty big achievement that this got made and reached a global audience, but yeah, in a vacuum, it's undoubtedly a bad movie. Felt like an amateur movie on a shoestring budget. Captive State - 4/10 Wild Nights With Emily - 4/10 - This movie is what happens when someone asks the question "hey, what if we turned Emily Dickinson's life into an SNL skit? ". I get what they were going for, and Molly Shannon is great, but this was extremely unfunny and probably the longest 84-minute movie I've ever seen. Dark Pheonix - 4/10 The Addams Family - 4/10 Midway - 4/10 To Dust - 4/10 Rojo - 4/10 - The only memorable thing about this movie is that there was a power outage about 90 minutes in so they comped my ticket and gave me a free drink. So that was cool, I guess. The Kid Who Would Be King - 4/10 MIB: International - 4/10 The Kid - 4/10 - There's a 98% chance that this movie is some kind of tax write-off or money laundering scheme. It somehow got 2 big names (Pratt & Hawke), co-starring the son of the producer in his first movie ever. Directed by Vincent D'Onofrio for some reason (??? ). Was dumped by Lionsgate in a few hundred theaters with 0 marketing/promotion, and flopped hard. It's dated, boring, and unoriginal. Cheesy dialogue. Literally a story that's been told a million times before, usually in much better ways. No reason for this to exist. Chris Pratt has the worst fake-movie-beard of all time in this, that's kinda worth checking out. Ramen Shop - 4/10 The Good Liar - 4/10 - The most convoluted, needlessly-complicated plot of the year. Helen Mirren & Ian McKellen both phone it in (I don't blame them, they were given trash to work with). I hate when movies try to crowbar "WW2 flashbacks" into their movies when it's not needed. Climax - 4/10 Harriet - 4/10 Lucy in the Sky - 4/10 - Once or twice a year, a movie comes along that has such a frustrating/stupid/anti-climactic ending it makes me actually angry. This is that movie. Natalie Portman had another movie like that last year (Vox Lux). Hey Noah Hawley, what the fuck? Freaks - 4/10 - This movie would fit well in the "Good Idea But Bad Execution" subreddit. Tel Aviv On Fire - 4/10 Ma - 4/10 Frankie - 3/10 Stuber - 3/10 Serenity - 3/10 - In a year full of batshit-crazy twists (looking at you, Last Christmas), this easily had the batshit-iest twist. It's something you actually have to experience yourself, and be fully-immersed in it, to appreciate how mind-numblingly crazy it is. How they got A-list talent for this script is a total mystery, but it probably involves of a lot of favors and cocaine. It's almost "so bad its good". Almost. I can't wait for the sequel, Free Guy, next year. Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil - 3/10 - More genocide than I expected for a live-action Disney fairy tale movie. Donnybrook - 3/10 The Photograph - 3/10 - Zzzzzzzzzz... Charlie's Angels - 3/10 Hellboy - 3/10 - This movie is like that annoying kid in middle school that tries way to hard to be edgy. It's gory and vulgar just for the sake of being gory & vulgar. It reminded me of the Predator reboot last year, had the same kind of dated/forced humor that seems to have no real target audience (except for the aforementioned middle school edgy kid I guess). Bad CGI and a boring villain. iirc it also had a lame sequel-bait ending which I hate. Happy Death Day 2U - 3/10 - The Sun Is Also A Star - 3/10 - It's filmed like a generic music video and has the emotional depth of a puddle. Don't Let Go - 3/10 The Invisibles - 3/10 Playing with Fire - 3/10 - This was just like Mark Wahlberg's Instant Family last year, except that it was worse in every imaginable way. No lie, the end-credits bloopers were by far better than anything else in the movie. It was the only time I even chuckled or felt any type of emotion. Cats - 2/10 - There's not much more I could say that already hasn't been said. Yes, it was bad. No, it wasn't the worst movie in history. For me, it was just so boring. Forgettable songs (except Beautiful Ghosts), no story/plot, nonsensical ending. Just wanted it to end. Jennifer Hudson just floating into space for no reason, Judi Dench giving me unwarranted lessons about raising cats, Ian McKellen slurping milk from a bowl, Extremely-Hairy-And-Naked-Idris-Elba, Cockroach Genocide, etc. These things all happened and we can't change them, and for us to grow as a society, we need to just move on and learn from our mistakes. Rambo: Last Blood - 2/10 The Sound of Silence - 2/10 - More like The Sound of Boredom, amirite? No but seriously, that's all I got. This movie was the closest I got to falling asleep in my seat this year. Synonyms - 2/10 Black Christmas - 2/10 - Extremely cheesy dialogue, cop-out violence, boring/predictable jump scares, low production value (bad even for a low-end Blumhouse movie), some of the worst one-liners you've ever heard, unrealistic/2D characters. Shitty ending. Wayyyyy too heavy-handed with the message. About as subtle as a flying brick to the forehead. Amateur acting, cutaway for every death, etc etc. After the Wedding - 2/10 - Overacted, muddled garbage. 47 Meters Down Uncaged - 1/10 Shaft - 1/10 - Crude, unfunny, soulless, grating, pointless. There's a million adjectives I could use to describe this reboot, and none of them are positive. This is one I'm surprised I didn't just walk out of. Probably didn't have anything better do do that day. Jexi - 1/10 - This year's worst movie. It's just the kind of movie that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, like you need to watch something else to get the stink of this one out of your mind. It was just so mean-spirited, from start to finish. Not a single joke landed, you just hated all of the characters. There are no redeeming factors. On the technical side, it was very basic, looked like a cheap music video. No memorable scenes, no good lines of dialogue, no originality in any way. None of the "cheerful"/"pick-me-up" moments earn any kind of emotional reaction. If you had a freshman high-school film student remake Her as a shitty comedy, this would be it. The fact that I paid money to see this is something I will never live down. Movies that I saw outside of theaters, not included in the list: The King - 8/10 - Netflix Paddleton - 8/10 - Netflix El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story - 8/10 - Netflix High Flying Bird - 7/10 - Netflix Dolemite Is My Name - 7/10 - Netflix Triple Frontier - 6/10 - Netflix The Boy Who Harnessed Wind - 6/10 - Netflix The Laundromat - 5/10 - Netflix The Highwaymen - 5/10 - Netflix Velvet Buzzsaw - 4/10 - Netflix Bird Box - 4/10 - Netflix Six Underground - 2/10 - Netflix Movies that I saw in theaters in 2019, but are not included in the list due to original release date: If Beale Street Could Talk - 9/10 Cold War - 9/10 Capernaum - 9/10 Mary Poppins Returns - 7/10 The Charmer - 6/10 Movies that I haven't seen yet but will see in the next few weeks: Little Women 1917 In Fabric Tremors Just Mercy Midnight Family A Million Little Pieces The Earthquake Bird American Son Portrait of A Lady On Fire Clemency Beanpole The Kingmaker The Song of Names Here is the distribution of theater visits by day of the week: Throughout the year, I've gone to 13 different theaters. 9 at major chains, and 4 at indie theaters. Here's the distribution of visits by theater: Here is the distribution of theater visits by month: Other: The longest stretch I went without going to the movies was from July 21st thru August 20th, without a single trip to the movies. Partially due to an out-of-country trip and personal stuff. During this time I "missed out" on The Kitchen, The Nightingale, Brian Banks, and Honeyland. Mostly caught up to the rest. The most theater visits in a one-week span was November 1st thru November 8th, with 8 movies that week. The most in one day was 3 movies in theaters on March 15th, 2019 ( Styx, To Dust, and Captive State). There were 26 double-headers this year (two movies in theaters during the same day, usually back-to-back). Solid year, not as many surprises as 2018 though. Going to try to break 200 in 2020. Here is last year's ranking:.

Italian nun Alternative Title: Francesca Romana Saint Frances of Rome, Italian Santa Francesca Romana, (born 1384, Rome [Italy]—died March 9, 1440, Rome; canonized 1608; feast day March 9), founder of the Oblate Congregation of Tor de’ Specchi (Oblates of St. Frances of Rome), a community that, with the Olivetan Benedictines, works for the sick and the poor. When she was only 13, Frances’ parents married her to Lorenzo de’ Ponziani, whose sister-in-law, Vannozza, helped Frances draft a rule of life for the new order. In the fierce civil strife caused by the Great Schism of the Western church, the Ponzianis lost their fortune. While living in part of her ruined palace, Frances shared her last resources with the suffering people. With Lorenzo’s approval, she founded (1425) the Oblates of Mary, known since 1433 as the Oblate Congregation of Tor de’ Specchi. Upon her husband’s death in 1436, she became its superior. Watch Movie Saint. This hit so hard.

This reminds me of her role in VA 😆😂

Saint Frances of Rome, Obl. O. S. B. Part of a series The Life of St. Frances of Rome Tor de' Specchi Monastery, Rome, Italy by Antoniazzo Romano (1468) Patroness of Benedictine Oblates Born 1384 Rome, Papal States Died March 9, 1440 Rome, Papal States Venerated in Roman Catholic Church Canonized 1608, Rome, Papal States, by Pope Paul V Major shrine Church of Santa Francesca Romana, Rome, Italy Feast March 9 Patronage Benedictine oblates; automobile drivers; widows. Frances of Rome, Obl. B., ( Italian: Santa Francesca Romana) (1384 – March 9, 1440) is an Italian saint who was a wife, mother, mystic, organizer of charitable services and a Benedictine oblate who founded a religious community of oblates, who share a common life without religious vows. Life [ edit] Frances was born in 1384 in Rome to a wealthy and aristocratic couple, Paolo Bussa and Iacobella dei Roffredeschi, in the up-and-coming district of Parione and christened in the nearby Church of St. Agnes on the famed Piazza Navona. [1] When she was eleven years old, she wanted to be a nun, but, at about the age of twelve, her parents forced her to marry Lorenzo Ponziani, commander of the papal troops of Rome and member of an extremely wealthy family. Although the marriage had been arranged, it was a happy one, lasting for forty years, partly because Lorenzo admired his wife, and partly because he was frequently away at war. With her sister-in-law Vannozza, Frances visited the poor and took care of the sick, inspiring other wealthy women of the city to do the same. Soon after her marriage, Frances fell seriously ill. Her husband called a man in who dabbled in magic, but Frances drove him away, and later recounted to Vannozza that St. Alexis had appeared to her and cured her. [2] When her mother-in-law died, Frances became mistress of the household. During a time of flood and famine, she turned part of the family's country estate into a hospital [3] and distributed food and clothing to the poor. According to one account, her father-in-law was so angry that he took away from her the keys to the supply rooms; but gave them back when he saw that the corn bin and wine barrel were replenished after Frances finished praying. St Francesca Romana Giving Alms, Baciccio During the wars between the pope in Rome and various anti-popes in the Western Schism of the Catholic Church, Lorenzo served the former. According to one story, their son Battista was to be delivered as a hostage to the commander of the Neapolitan troops. Obeying this order on the command of her spiritual director, Frances took her son to the Campidoglio. On the way, she stopped in the Church of the Aracoeli located there and entrusted her son's life to the Blessed Mother. When they arrived at the appointed site, the soldiers tried to put her son on a horse to transport him to captivity. However, the horse refused to move despite heavy whipping. The superstitious soldiers saw the hand of God in this and returned the boy to his mother. [4] During a period of forced exile, much of Lorenzo's property and possessions were destroyed. [5] In the course of one occupation of Rome by Neapolitan forces in the early part of the century, he was wounded so severely that he never fully recovered. Frances nursed him throughout the rest of his life. Frances experienced other sorrows during her marriage to Lorenzo. They lost two children to the plague. Chaos ruled the city in that period of neglect by the pope and the ongoing warfare between him and the various forces competing for power on the Italian peninsula devastated the city. The city of Rome was largely in ruins, and wolves were known to enter the streets. Frances again opened her home as a hospital and drove her wagon through the countryside to collect wood for fire and herbs for medicine. [6] It is said she had the gift of healing, and over 60 cases were attested to during the canonization proceedings. [4] According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "With her husband's consent St. Frances practiced continence, and advanced in a life of contemplation. Her visions often assumed the form of drama enacted for her by heavenly personages. She had the gift of miracles and ecstasy, as well as the bodily vision of her guardian angel, had revelations concerning Purgatory and Hell, and foretold the ending of the Western Schism. She could read the secrets of consciences and detect plots of diabolical origin. She was remarkable for her humility and detachment, her obedience and patience". [5] On August 15, 1425, the feast of the Assumption of Mary, she founded the Olivetan Oblates of Mary, a confraternity of pious women, under the authority of the Olivetan monks of the Abbey of Santa Maria Nova in Rome, but neither cloistered nor bound by formal vows, so they could follow her pattern of combining a life of prayer with answering the needs of their society. [7] In March 1433 she founded a monastery at Tor de' Specchi, near the Campidoglio, in order to allow for a common life by those members of the confraternity who felt so called. [4] This monastery remains the only house of the Institute. That July 4, they received the approval of Pope Eugene IV as a religious congregation of oblates with private religious vows. The community later became known simply as the Oblates of St. Frances of Rome. Frances herself remained in her own home, nursing her husband for the last seven years of his life from wounds he had received in battle. When he died in 1436, she moved into the monastery and became the superior. [5] She died in 1440 and was buried in Santa Maria Nova. Frances of Rome Accompanied by her guardian angel Veneration [ edit] On May 9, 1608, she was canonized by Pope Paul V, [2] and in the following decades a diligent search was made for her remains, which had been hidden due to the troubled times in which she lived. Her body was found incorrupt some months after her death. Her grave was identified on April 2, 1638, (but this time only the bones remained), and her remains were reburied in the Church of Santa Maria Nova on March 9, 1649, which since then has been her feast day. Again, in 1869, her body was exhumed and has since then been displayed in a glass coffin for the veneration of the faithful. The Church of Santa Maria Nova is now usually referred to as the Church of St. Frances. Patronage [ edit] In 1925, Pope Pius XI declared her the patron saint of automobile drivers because of a legend that an angel used to light the road before her with a lantern when she traveled, keeping her safe from hazards. Within the Benedictine Order, she is honored as a patron saint of all oblates. She is also a patron saint of widows. So many call it a remake of the animated film, but it's clearly gone back to the original source, Ballad of Mulan for a fresh take. That little bait-and-switch speech the Emperor gives is my favorite moment in the film. You disobeyed your father, you lied to get into the army, blew off said army when it told you what to do, ran into combat on your own, destroyed my house, spat in the face of generations worth of male-dominated society, and generally you've been carrying on like you and your little morals are above the highest authority in all of China. Your resume is incredible! Let's talk salary.

I’m back at the place I started. My Aunt and Uncle live closest to the airport and have plenty of room…and the kids and I are again occupying the downstairs, but this time my Mom is upstairs in the room I was meant to sleep in when we arrived over ten days ago. Two weeks? Twelve days? I’ve lost count. The nights ran into days, the days into nights and too many things happened to even write about. I came here to allow my kids a chance to run around the family mountain in West Virginia while I helped my Mom help the rest of my family deal with my ailing Aunt. I knew she rushed here quickly to be by her side, but I think for those first 24 hours or so we all had some hope. I moved from relative to relative’s home, while the kids spent time with their grandparents, and just did as I was told. Mostly what I was told entailed being near my Mom, or cousins. Running errands that seemed like half an errand to keep me busy and half an errand to keep me out of the way and mostly just giving all of us something to do while we waited and watched and wondered. The kids and I left California on June 16th. I handed them off to their grandmother at the airport we flew into on June 17th. On June 20th, after telling my Aunt I was really enjoying spending time with my God-daughter, and then going about feeling useless near the kitchen as we tried to keep things tidy…I watched as my Mom forcefully asked family friends to leave quickly out the back door and my Uncle rushed to  his wife’s side. Her daughters already next to her, her grandchildren having just left moments before, as if she knew they were too young and it would be too much to see her pass. There was so much movement, yet…barely any. A controlled chaos where all you could hear were hearts breaking and tears falling. The rest is a blur. I know it’s June 27th and this morning we entered my grandfather’s nursing home, not far from where I’m typing this, and my son said hello and then wanted to leave the room. My Mom took him out in the hall and they sat on a couch. My daughter, loud and brave, sang “Let it Go” to my 96-year-old grandfather and he smiled and attempted to conduct her with his frail hand. He clapped when she finished. I held her and thanked her and escorted her out to my Mom waiting in the hall. My brother and I talked to our grandfather and he proudly showed one of the aid’s my photo with President Obama that he has displayed in what seems like poster type size on his bulletin board, next to which is a photo of my two kids, the ones still a bit uncomfortable in the hallway. I dug through my purse as I wanted to show him I carry the locket he gave my grandmother everywhere I go…always in my purse. At first he didn’t recognize it, then you could see the lightbulb go off. She brings you luck, doesn’t she? Yes, Grandpa, she does. Earlier, I had given all I could emotionally after one night at the funeral home, then had to spend a day in bed from pure stress induced exhaustion/migraine, and then came the day that included the funeral mass and wake. On this day I broke my grandfather’s rule of no kisses (he’s afraid he’ll give me germs) and kissed him goodbye and told him I loved him and went into the hall while my brother talked to him a bit more. Knowing what it took to get my body healthy enough to handle this trip to be there for my Mom and my brother and my family and for myself, and seeing the way my grandfather looked as we entered the room, sleeping. I knew I had said my goodbye for the last time. I put on my sunglasses in the front of the car, kids playing with each other in the way back of the car and paying no attention to me. Again the tears streaming down my face as they had for a straight week. My Mom somehow always with tissue in her purse. No matter how good of a mother I think I am, and how prepared I think I may be, there’s my Mom with even more tissue because no matter how much I searched through my own purse I couldn’t find the pack I knew I had in there. Somewhere in there we had driven to Toledo to pick up the kids after sitting in traffic dazed, unmoving, phones constantly buzzing and ringing with arrangements to be made and my Mom’s help needed. Somewhere in there I offered to take communion at mass so my cousin didn’t have to worry which row would walk up first. Somewhere in there I hugged childhood friends and college friends and family friends I’ve known since I was born. Somewhere in there I had to remind the kids not to worry if they saw Nana or their Uncle cry every once in awhile. Somewhere in there I called my husband wishing he were closer so I could just collapse in his arms. Somewhere in there I called my doctor and explained that unless he thought it was detrimental to my health I needed to stay where I was to be with my family. Somewhere in there I felt as though I was entirely useless, as no one wanted to worry about my health in the midst of all this, so I was never given a job or anything to do, I was just simply there. Somewhere in there I stood on a dock and watched fireworks, both kids in my arms, as we “ooooh’d” and “aaaaaah’d” while they boomed overhead and over the river. Somewhere in there we managed to get the kids Red Wings, Michigan State, and Tigers t-shirts and Coney Island loose hamburgers and Vernor’s floats. Somewhere in there I told them it really was fish fly season, the mythical time of summer I had told them about their entire lives, yet we still haven’t seen one so they may never believe me. Somewhere in there my entire childhood and adolescence flashed before me and my heart broke over and over again because nothing will ever be the same for anyone I love. Now we will get back on a plane and go back to our lives. I’ll resume treatment and the kids will continue their summer vacation. However things will need to change. I said goodbye to two people I love this week and I can’t do it again. I am tired of so many of those thoughts where we  think of someone yet don’t pick up the phone. Where we are reminded of a fun time yet fail to email those involved just to re-live the good times had by all. I refuse to be a slave to these tears and everything  I want to say, I’m saying it. Everyone who I  love will know it and hopefully feel my love. My eyes swollen, my heart heavy, I leave with suitcases full, my mind still jumbled, and my thoughts all over this state in which I no longer live, but provides me with memories and heartache and family. A combination you can not take for granted and you must remember to honor or it will sneak up on you and steal your most precious memories and leaving you wanting, wishing for just one more.

イントロベース音強いな!笑. Just one more kiss movie online. Thanksgiving is almost here, and nothing goes quite as well with a weekend off from work and eating huge amounts of food like hours spent digesting on the couch, binge-watching movies and TV shows. Unfortunately, given the massive amount of content available on the myriad streaming platforms, actually finding something that everyone can agree on to watch can be as miserable as whenever someone brings up politics during Thanksgiving dinner. Here are our suggestions to help make your holiday streaming go smoothly. The Princess Bride The Princess Bride is a classic adventure movie with something for everyone: “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…” Think family comedy, but with one of the greatest fencing scenes ever filmed. My huge extended family used to rewatch The Princess Bride every single year after Thanksgiving dinner — probably the one thing everyone could agree on — and it only gets better with repeat viewing. Though as a result, I believed Rodents of Unusual Size (ROUS) were nesting in my childhood closet and refused to sleep with the door open. —Helen Havlak Where to stream: Rent on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, or Vudu. Best seen with: Your kids, who will definitely not have nightmares about the ROUS. The Long Kiss Goodnight Geena Davis A little girl screaming “Life is pain, mommy! ” Okay, if you really need more reasons, here they are. This is a Christmas movie about a schoolteacher with amnesia discovering she’s actually a stone-cold assassin. This a road trip movie with Samuel L. Jackson doing extremely Samuel L. Jackson things. This is a classic ‘80s-style action movie (made in 1996) that you would swear is directed by Shane Black, but in fact he just wrote it. It’s cringe-y and dated and just edgy enough to be fun, but not so edgy that you’ll feel awkward watching it with your parents. —Dieter Bohn Best seen with: That one insufferable uncle who says that Die Hard is the only good Christmas movie. Star Wars (all of them) In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new Star Wars movie coming out in less than a month. What better way to prepare than watching Episodes 1 through 8 in a giant marathon? (Throw in the first few episodes of The Mandalorian, too, while you’re already logged into Disney+). Plus, Star Wars movies are the ultimate crowd pleaser — uncontroversial tales of good and evil with epic lightsaber and space duels that should entertain the entire family without too much of a fight over what to watch. —Chaim Gartenberg Where to stream: Disney+, Netflix (for The Last Jedi) Best seen with: The Star Wars fan in your life who won’t stop talking about The Rise of Skywalker. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Kiss Kiss Bang Bang didn’t get the audience it deserved when it first came out, and A. O. Scott, The New York Times movie critic, panned it: “It’s just a movie with no particular reason for existing, ” he wrote. Well, no movie has any reason to exist at all, if you want to get existential about it, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a sun-drenched noir that just wants you to have a good time. Here are three reasons you should watch this movie: Robert Downey Jr. ’s performance, Michelle Monaghan’s performance, and especially Val Kilmer’s performance. Downey plays Harry Lockhart, a small-time New York criminal who’s mistaken for an actor while he’s running from the cops and flown to Los Angeles for a movie role. There he meets Kilmer’s Perry, a private eye who Harry shadows to help prepare for his role. Perry insists being a PI is boring, and that’s when the bodies start turning up. As Harry and Perry try to get to the bottom of things without getting killed themselves, Harry runs into his childhood crush, Harmony, a failing actress with a thing for detective novels. The rest of the plot is an homage to the noir genre, hitting every major cliché along the way with self-aware glee. Every gun that is placed on the mantelpiece goes off by the end, while Kilmer, Downey, and Monaghan swap witty one-liners. It’s a buddy comedy for people who’ve seen every buddy comedy, a noir for Raymond Chandler aficionados, a slightly bitchy love letter to Hollywood, and a career-best performance from Kilmer. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is fast and funny — and pretty much endlessly rewatchable, so after you join its little cult, you can press it on all your friends. —Elizabeth Lopatto Best seen with: Fans of Veronica Mars and Hot Fuzz. Also, any English teachers, writers, failed writers, editors, or copy editors you may know: there is a recurring joke about adverb usage that they will especially appreciate. Chef If you’re thinking, “Hey, my family and I need a movie that will make us want to eat even more food than what we’ve already consumed, ” then this is the movie for you! Chef is a fun and lighthearted movie with a great cast, starring Jon Favreau, Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., and more. After quitting his job at a high-end restaurant in Los Angeles, Chef Carl Casper decides to launch a food truck with his best friend, ex-wife, and son. My mom and I watched this last Thanksgiving actually and I think we’ll probably watch it again because it was that good. Just make sure you have snacks nearby or else you’ll be pausing the movie multiple times like we did, to run to the kitchen for leftovers. –Dilpreet Kainth Where to stream: Amazon Prime Video Best seen with: Basically anyone who’s eating those leftovers Frozen There are two reasons to watch Frozen over Thanksgiving. 1. Because you will probably be seeing Frozen 2 this weekend, and odds are you (or more likely, your child / cousin / niece / nephew / etc. who was too young to remember the story details from the first movie) could use a refresher on what exactly happened in the first movie back in *checks notes* 2013. 2. Alternatively, if your kids are still younger, just show them this, pretend it’s Frozen 2, and save on the movie tickets. —Chaim Gartenberg Where to stream: Disney+ Best seen with: Smaller relatives that you’ll be taking to the movie theater in a few weeks / days / hours to see Frozen 2. Image: Sony Pictures Animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse In a world dominated by the MCU, superhero movies can start to feel very, very same. One that actually feels different is Into the Spider-Verse, a Marvel-character movie that isn’t actually made by the behemoth of a film studio. The movie tells a classic superhero origin story to the T, but it deconstructs those familiar beats and uses them to build a hilarious wrapper around a newer character whose story feels less like a parable and more like the experience of someone actually struggling to grow up in New York City (... just with a radioactive spider thrown in). If for nothing else, the animation alone should be enough for a draw here. Into the Spider-Verse looks like a comic book that’s come alive, and there’s nothing else on-screen quite like it. Plus, getting everyone to agree to watch Spider-Man should be pretty easy. And ultimately, isn’t avoiding a prolonged argument about what to watch truly something to be thankful for? —Jake Kastrenakes Where to stream: Netflix Best seen with: Anyone who appreciates a good Nicolas Cage cameo. Eighth Grade If you’re the kind of person who would rather not be reduced to floods of tears over the holiday, then please feel free to skip Eighth Grade. Bo Burnham’s directorial debut is a relatively simple story about a girl struggling to get through a year of school. What makes this a great holiday watch is just how painfully relatable her experience is, both for anyone young enough to remember their middle school years, as well as any parents who spent that time desperately trying to support them. —Jon Porter Best seen with: A family member you haven’t hugged in a little while. Iron Man 3 Iron Man 3 isn’t technically a Thanksgiving movie, but finding a superhero flick that takes time to celebrate family and hours-long dinners full of laughter and joy is difficult. For one, superheroes don’t really have families. For another, they’re busy. Who has the time? Fortunately, director Shane Black partnered with Marvel Studios and Robert Downey Jr. (who he collaborated with on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, also on this list) to make a superhero Christmas movie. And since Christmas is so close to Thanksgiving, why not just start with Iron Man 3 and work your way back? Iron Man 3 is also one of the best Tony Stark stories (and a perfect evolution of Marvel’s take on the infamous “Demon in a Bottle” comic that Disney tried to start in Iron Man 2). If you’re looking for a superhero movie, this is the most holiday appropriate. —Julia Alexander Best seen with: Family members who won’t go, “What is happening now? ” every few minutes. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Hear me out. Look, just give me 15 seconds to sell my case. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t a particularly great movie. It’s arguably better than Justice League in the Zack Snyder DC Universe, but it isn’t as fun as Aquaman or as critically acclaimed as Joker. It is, however, a perfect Thanksgiving movie because of one scene: the infamous “Martha” scene. There’s a moment in the movie where Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, who have spent the entire movie trying to kill each other, form an unlikely friendship over the fact that both their mothers are named Martha. Can you imagine?! You can’t! It’s an absolutely ludicrous moment. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is arguably about family, therefore, and makes this nearly three-hour romp a must watch with family members who just want to watch something for ten minutes before falling asleep on the couch. —Julia Alexander Best seen with: Ideally, a family member named Martha. Under the Skin A lot of suggestions on this list are movies that are accessible and approachable to all members of your family. But what if you want to put on something that will immediately alienate them? What is the movie you can put on that will make everyone slowly vacate the room? My pick is Under the Skin, a slow, haunted sci-fi film that grotesquely ponders existence and intimacy. It’s the kind of pretentious stuff sure to scare the impatient viewer away. Sure, Scarlett Johansson in a fur coat might be a draw. (“Is that the nice girl from Lost in Translation? ” an aunt might ask. ) But about five minutes into this movie, your parents and extended relatives will be immediately repulsed by the lack of dialogue, itchy score, bewildering concept, all the swinging flaccid dicks being slowly lowered into black liquid. —Kevin Nguyen Best seen with: Nobody, but who knows, maybe that Lost in Translation -loving aunt might stick around. The City of Lost Children French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is best known for the romantic comedy Amélie. But he’s also the co-director (along with collaborator Marc Caro) of The City of Lost Children: a gorgeous, steampunk-ish fantasy film about a man who kidnaps children to steal their dreams, until he unwisely takes the brother of a circus strongman played by Ron Perlman. There’s a bizarre plot involving child-catching cyborgs, urchin street gangs, and a family of discarded scientific experiments living in an abandoned oil rig. And for anybody who’s just wandering through the living room, every scene is bursting with surreal and memorably creepy imagery. —Adi Robertson Best seen with: Teens and other family members (although definitely not children) who want something weird and substantive without tipping into ponderous artsiness, outright alienation, or over-the-top sex and gore. Holiday in the Wild Netflix’s latest holiday movie, Holiday in the Wild, might have all the makings of a classic, terrible Hallmark movie, featuring the age-defying Kristin Davis and Rob Lowe falling in love over Christmas in Africa and overcoming a slew of midlife crisis cliches. (And really, what more could you want? ) But this Netflix romcom is worth watching because of the elephants. The story takes place in an elephant sanctuary in Zambia, and it showcases the plight of elephant orphans and the terrible poaching problem that elephants face in parts of Africa. There are also lots of cute baby elephants (and a trunk hug scene)! —Esther Cohen Best seen with: Elephant and/or Rob Lowe enthusiasts Duck Soup This is the Marx Brothers’ funniest and most chaotically satirical movie, and a great introduction for anyone new to their films. Groucho plays the happily corrupt leader of a fictional nation who starts a war just because he feels insulted by a rival; Chico and Harpo are his equally self-interested spies. But actually, the plot doesn’t really matter — like all their movies, this is basically a series of comedy skits. The adults will like the satire and wordplay, the kids will like the knockabout physical comedy (assuming they can handle the lack of color in this 1933 film). —Barbara Krasnoff Best seen with: Anyone who has been spending too much time paying attention to the news. The Magicians The Magicians is TV’s answer to “what if Harry Potter, but horny?, ” a thoroughly modern take on adult onset ennui sprinkled with sex, spells, and snarky fantasy creatures. It’s rare that I’ll argue a show is better than any book, but SyFy’s adaptation of Lev Grossman’s magical trilogy is the exception. The Magicians may start as another cliche tale about a white guy who finds out he’s special, but it evolves into something much more, tackling topics like depression, sexual violence, and queer identity. It manages to do all this while also pulling off episodes that include bank heists, impromptu musicals, and forests that may or may not get you high. What more could you want? —Megan Farokhmanesh Best seen wit h: Your relatives who only use Harry Potter references to talk about politics. Jeopardy Jeopardy is a good show. It’s been running for a very long time, probably because it is just that: a good show. —Makena Kelly Best seen with: Anyone except the weird cousins who spent too many years competing on their middle school Quiz Bowl team. Photo: Amazon Prime Video Good Omens The adaptation of the beloved Terry Pratchett / Neil Gaiman novel about an angel and a demon teaming up to try to prevent Armageddon finally made its way to TV with an Amazon Prime miniseries this year. It’s quirky and optimistic and very British, and is more or less the television equivalent of a cozy blanket and a mug of a hot chocolate (except for the whole “end of the world” bit). The key is the casting of Michael Sheen and David Tennant, perfectly cast as the angel / devil duo with a love-hate relationship that spans several millennia. Plus, the six-episode miniseries is the perfect length to binge over the holiday weekend. —Chaim Gartenberg Where to stream: Amazon Prime Best seen with: Fans of the book, relatives who aren’t overly offended by alternative takes on religious content. Terrace House If you want to watch the realest reality show, it’s Terrace House. The entire premise: six Japanese young adults, three men and three women, live together in a beautiful Japanese home. That’s it. From there, the messiness of life takes over and you get to see some real drama. A lot of watching the show is to speculate who will date who, but that will lead to endless discussions with your family (if you can pull yourself away from watching just one more episode). And the best parts of the show are the six additional cast members who, throughout each episode, get airtime to comment and banter about the same exact episode you’re watching. They almost become your second family. Netflix has already released the first twelve episodes of the show’s newest season, and the next batch comes out on December 24th, so Thanksgiving break gives you plenty of time to catch up. —Jay Peters Best seen with: Your other millennial family members who, despite all being older than 21, are still shunted to the kids table. Kiwami Japan Colloquially referred to as “knife psycho” in my apartment, this Japanese YouTuber makes knives that are amazingly well crafted out of increasingly stranger materials. However, there is a strange malice that haunts these videos, which are shot less like a relaxing crafting video and more like a horror film. You will ask why he would make a knife out of fungi, or what his fascination with cow-shaped creamers is, or what would compel someone to make a ring out of human fingernails? But he never speaks, so you will never know. You can only watch it unfold and scream your questions uselessly at the screen. Unanswered, you will watch the next video in hopes of gleaning some understanding, but it will never come. —Michael Moore Where to stream: YouTube Best seen with: Those wishing to distract themselves and their family from familial interactions with existential dread. Cobra Kai This show is not good — it’s fantastic. Taking place years after the original Karate Kid movie, Danny (the original hero) is a successful businessman owning multiple car dealerships, while the once-villainous Johnny is a burnout just living day to day until he reopens the Cobra Kai dojo and enrolls a few misfit kids. Going into Cobra Kai, you’d expect a story with a lot of black-and-white morality, but what you actually get is a complex tale that interweaves morality, community, and remixes a ton of what made the original great. No one is all good, and no one is all bad, and best of all: there are plenty of cars to wax. —Grayson Blackmon Where to stream: YouTube Premium Best seen with: Basically anyone in your family. It’ll appeal to anyone who’s seen the original movie, but you don’t need to have seen it to enjoy. Photo by Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images Football It’s Thanksgiving. There is NFL football. There is NCAA football. Just watch the football. — Chaim Gartenberg (on behalf of his brother Eli) Where to stream: Well, that depends. If you have a TV antenna or cable, you’re best off using that. Alternatively, try to “borrow” a cable login from one of your visiting relatives if they pay for terrestrial television. You can also sign up for an over-the-top streaming service that gets you CBS / NBC / Fox. Or just admit defeat and sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket, but be aware that there may be blackouts based on geography. Honestly, streaming football is still painfully complicated in 2019. Just One More kisses. Najlepszyy! ♥♥♥. Just one more kiss t shirt. Just One More. | Apr 12, 2018 5:00 pm | Apr 17, 2018 9:44 am If you haven’t heard,  Grey’s Anatomy  has a spin-off show, and it is lit. You might be thinking, but there is Chicago Fire, you’re right but both shows are lit, and you can watch both shows. Alright, done talking, let’s get to recapping episode 4. It started with Andi & Jack, arguing about some boots that will cost the Firehouse a lot of money. To be fair, they need the new boots. However, not that expensive kind of boots and we see them as mom and dad fighting, instead of chiefs. Which, they both need to be on the same page about to help things run smoothly, but you can feel the sexual tension between these two.  Andi finally shouted, “Stop arguing with me! ” Which, Jack gives her a smile as he agrees and stops the argument by kissing her. In which leads them to hook up in the Captain bunk. Later on, Victoria and Mack find it weird that she is all of a sudden in a good mood and tossing apples around. However, that was cut short when it was, you know it. FIRE TIME! (Lit time didn’t sound right). They arrive at a brand new bed-and-breakfast, that run by two sisters who seemed are at each other’s throats, but that’s not the case. Siblings fight, all the time, its normal. Oh, the fire that they had to put out was a teeny tiny fire that was consuming an oven mitt on the stove.  No surprise, once Andi & Jack are back at the firehouse, they have, yes you guessed it, sex. After having a conversation with JJ, Miller’s in the early stage of “do what needs to be done, ” and he doesn’t know how long one should wait after someone’s significant other passes. After he goes to almost everyone, he ends up going to Captain Herrera, which he skips out on giving out advice on how to use your firefighter status as a pickup line. There is some MISINFORMATION on this thread. In actuality. This is a COVER of a song sung in the 1930s by an Englishwoman -performer named Jessie Mathews. you can find it on YOUTUBE ! However. this version IS perfect for the movie. one of my favorite movies. Are you overwhelmed by how much television is available right now? Is life getting in the way of keeping up with the shows you wanna try out? We feel your tube-related pain. Here’s a handy feature that’ll help you locate the hidden gems in this era of  Peak TV. PEN15 NETWORK | Hulu CREATED BY | Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle and Sam Zvibleman NUMBER OF EPISODES | 10 EPISODE LENGTH | 30 mins. PREMISE | Hey, wanna go back to middle school? Yeah, probably not, so let’s be grateful that stars/co-creators Erskine and Konkle volunteered to dive right back into their awkward teen years for our amusement as 13-year-old BFFs Maya and Anna, entering their first day of seventh grade together in the year 2000. (Erskine and Konkle play their teen selves, mind you, while real teen actors play their classmates. ) PEN15 chronicles the girls’ exhilarating, humiliating steps towards adulthood, complete with all the sexual confusion and embarrassing moments you’re still trying to forget. But at least they have each other, right? WORTH YOUR TIME IF YOU ENJOY… | Freaks and Geeks -style teen dramedies with lots of humor and heart; Big Mouth -style explorations of the horrors of puberty; Y2K-era nostalgia (AOL Instant Messenger! The Spice Girls! ); reliving your painful middle school days from a safe distance. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY ALSO KNOW… | In just one season, Erskine and Konkle instantly establish themselves as one of TV’s funniest comedic duos. (If they gave out Emmys in pairs, we’d be rooting for these two for sure. ) As writers and actors, they perfectly capture the exquisitely bittersweet struggle of growing up, and though the gimmick of them acting alongside real teens takes a little getting used to, it totally works and adds an extra layer of absurdity to Maya and Anna’s misadventures. (You actually kind of forget they’re not 13 after a while. ) Each episode is funnier than the last, the pop-culture references are spot-on — one episode centers on the girls joining some boys for an illicit VHS viewing of the steamy R-rated thriller Wild Things — and there’s a poignant emotional component here, too, with Maya and Anna leaning on each other through some very traumatic times (and haircuts). IS IT COMING BACK? | Yes! Hulu renewed it for a second season in May. (And we can hardly wait to see it. ) WHERE CAN I WATCH IT? | All 10 Season 1 episodes are available to stream now on Hulu.

Playmobil. basically a bland and boring toy brand version of LEGO, I think I had a few sets when I young but I was more a LEGO person, so I don't remember all that much about it, anyways with that said, how can you make a good animated film about toys, well Phill Lord and Chris Miller manage to do that incredibly well with the LEGO Movie and that film was a huge success and it's one of my favourite animated films of all time, so now a lot of animated films are taking what made that film a masterpiece and just doing the same thing, like Trolls and this year with Uglydolls, they don't do their own thing they are coping something that worked in the first place and so Studiocanal decided to team up with the Playmobil company to make their own version of the LEGO Movie, only with Playmobil, so they were nice enough to release it in the UK yesterday, which is weird I swear you lot in America don't get it until December. how strange. anyways, I saw it today and. what were you expecting? a good movie? pffff no! it's just as annoying, dumb and blatantly ripping-off the LEGO Movie with it's similarities, in other words it's terrible. so let's talk about it.
Marla (Ana-Taylor Joy) and her brother Charlie loves playing together with Playmobil toys and they really want to travel but after a certain incident with their parents, Marla has to look after Charlie and doesn't have enough time to play with him, but after Charlie tries to run away from her but comes across a toy fair where even more Playmobil is, but after both him and Marla get sucked into the Playmobil world where they both turn into Playmobil characters, but after Charlie gets super strength and gets kidnapped and taken to the ruler of the world Emperor Maximus (Adam Lambert) who wants to use him to battle the big beast, so Marla needs to rescue him, along the way he gets help from other characters like truck driver Del (Jim Gaffigan) and Secret agent Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe) so she goes through a lot of magical nonsensical lands from the Wild West, to a fairytale world and so muc-oh who care? seriously this movie fails from start to finish, it's so cliched and predicable, really unfunny, tries too hard to be dramatic but it didn't effect me, it has a lot of elements that are taken from the LEGO Movie and uses them to try and be it's own thing when really you can tell it has LEGO Movie written all over the place, it doesn't hide the fact that it's the LEGO Movie only replaced with Playmobil, it doesn't help either that is so much blatant foreshadowing, which can be done if it's clever and well hidden, but here it's very obviously at what will happen, so why care about the story and execution, speaking of, it's executed in a lazy way that it makes no sense at all and it feels boring, I'll admit I got a few chuckles and and one or two laughs, but the humour is rather lowbrow and juvenile and copying the LEGO Movie's humour in a way, the writing, the directing, the story, everything feels lazy and in a clueless way, which shows here that they were "trying" to make a movie, only to rip-off the LEGO Movie instead.
The animation and the live-action visuals are the closest things to being good, while it's not as amazing as the LEGO Movie, the animation is pretty good, not great but not awful, it has bright colours, nicely done character animation and designs, they expand on the world of Playmobil and do play around with it, with the figures, animals and the different magical and unique lands in the world, the facial expressions are also good, with the real life figures having a bland expression, here they have full expressions and it works in a film like this, not only that but with the live-action secnes are well shot, especially when Marla and Charlie are in the Toy Fair with the Playmobil toys, it's quite well done, however despite the good animation, it also looks generic, it's not very movie-y quality, it looks something that belongs to Netflix or YouTube, also unlike the LEGO Movie where the detail in the animation is supposed to look exactly like actual LEGOs and it's meant to have that feel of a kid playing with a toy, here it's just. a basic bland looking animated Playmobil film, many towns and areas feel very similar to the LEGO Movie. again, but regardless the animation certainly does it's job as a Playmobil movie, it has a lot colours, good character designs and well done fight scenes too, that and the live-action scenes look nice enough, although basic and bland looking and nothing special, the animators did somewhat try with what they got.
The characters are the very definition of "just toys for kids to buy" with maybe one exception, Marla is just the generic protagonist who has no redeeming qualities, like at all, Charlie is just even worse as the kid who thinks everything is "cool" and "awesome. he's super forgettable, Del is a annoying comic relief, he does everything a awful comic relief character do, be funny, try and help, think about other things then be serious for a moment, Emperor Maximus can be a tad bit entertaining, but is overall a annoying villain with motives that make no sense at all, the other characters like Bloodbones (Kenan Thompson) Robotitron (Lino DiSalvo) the Fairy-Godmother and other comedic characters are pretty much useless and have very little screen time, the only character that mildly enjoyable is Rex Dasher, he at least has a personality, good comedic timing, charm and in a way cool! easily my favourite character in the entire movie, the voice acting is not good, Ana-Taylor Joy is good as Marla, but nothing special, Jim Gaffigan as Del is just playing himself as a Playmobil character, not as good as Van-Helsing from Hotel Transylvania 3, but not as terrible as Ping from Duck, Duck Goose, Daniel Radcliffe is great as Rex Dasher, Adam Lambert is annoying as Maximus, Meghan Trainor is decent as the Fairy God-Mother, Kenan Thompson (why am I seeing his name appearing in a lot of animated films now? first Tiffany Haddish, now Thompson, I wonder what else lies in his contract. is okay as Bloodbones, basically everyone expect Radcliffe and Joy do a decent job, so with characters that no one cares about and voice acting that is underwhelming, it's just embarrassing, I mean I like Rex Dasher, Radcliffe and Joy do a good job with their performances, but it's not enough to save these dumb characters.
There are a few musician numbers that are forgettable and awful, except "Give The People What They Want" that was alright, but not enough, Heitor Pereira's score is beautiful and "Run Like the River" by Meghan Trainor is quite good, but it doesn't stand out at all really, just by the numbers, bland and very basic songs.
Why did I even waste my time watching this cash grab of a rip-off? Playmobil: the Movie is just awful, with a lazily written story, juvenile humour, basic and generic animation, forgettable characters, voice acting that is not very good and really dumb musical numbers, sure it has a moment of comedy, a few chuckles, animation is good along with nice looking live action visuals, Rex Dasher being the best character in the film, along with two good performances and decent music, but I'm afraid they don't save this trainwreck of a movie, it's just the Playmobil version of the LEGO Movie, only dumber and worser, I really hate this movie, not the worst animated film ever or one of the worst I seen, but it is quite close to being on the top five worst animated films of all time list! please don't go and see it, there are better animated films out there, go see Angry Birds Movie 2! that one was surprisingly decent, Toy Story 4 is still playing and I love the movie, this movie doesn't deserve your money, funnily enough I was thinking about the Emoji Movie while watching the Playmobil: the Movie, which is a very bad sign, I just hope studios stop making junk and start making original films instead but. that might not happen anytime soon, thanks to this film, I have lost hope. br> This dumb thing easily gets a 2.9/10.

What would Woody do? jump out of a moving vehicle.

Free Download Playmobil: films à l'affiche. Geez, did they even advertise this movie at all? This is honestly the first I'm hearing about it and. only because it bombed at the box office. apparently. shrugs. Good movie, fun for the whole family, left a kind feeling in its wake.
Since the comparison to the Lego movies seems to be inescapable, let's just say that the humor in Playmobil felt much more fresh and natural. The lack of sarcasm in exchange for genuine wit was great. This will do well in international markets too I am guessing.
Sraightforward story made it really great for younger kiddos while the creative imagery was captivating for the adults. I liked it very much.

Server 1 Server 2 Server 3.

It starts out with a song so already I'm like yuck. But I'm kinda happy that what I thought was going to be a completely animated story had a live action part. Not that I hate animation or anything like that but the live action set up was good for hyping me up on a concept I know nothing about really. Plus it adds a really funny bid when the live action kids become the Playmobil characters. It's like the b-movie version of the LEGO movie. A brother and sister get sucked into the world of Playmobil playsets and when little brother gets kidnapped big sis teams up with a food truck dude and super secret spy Rex dasher (who was really entertaining) to save her brother. Overall Playmobil the movie is not bad. The musical numbers did not impress me (but it's really not my thing) I did love the animation. Very good looking and flowed nicely. Not much of a story just a watered down reason to feature all the most popular or moreCommon Playmobil playsets.

Playmobil The Movie follows the adventures of siblings Charlie ( Gabriel Bateman) and Marla ( Anya Taylor-Joy). When the former unexpectedly disappears into the animated universe of Playmobil, Marla must go on a quest to bring him home. During her adventures she teams up with some unlikely new friends, including smooth-talking food truck driver Del ( Jim Gaffigan), dashing and charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher ( Daniel Radcliffe), a wholehearted misfit robot and an extravagant fairy-godmother ( Meghan Trainor). Adam Lambert  voices the character of villain Emperor Maximus. Originally scheduled for release on August 30, 2019, the failing STX Films pushed the film’s release back, hoping that their Hustlers is a hit upon its release and thus infuses their coffers with enough money to market this film. However, all the money in the world will probably not be enough to save this film from becoming a catastrophic box office failure. Check out photos from Playmobil The Movie: Playmobil The Movie Posters and Photos.

Amazing fan film, absolutely loved it! Lost it when he said “hello there” ❤️😂. Free download i am patrick 3a the patron saint of ireland html. The ending of this is so silly. As pointed out, Augustine believed the end was near. So did the apostles. So do I. Expectation of the immanent fulfillment of the Kingdom of God is always Orthodox and ALWAYS correct. An amazing thing about the Christian Faith is its ability to let every generation believe it may be the last. So we continually pray, Come, Lord Jesus. We're quoting Revelation when we do so. To think the Lord won't come back for a while, THAT'S heresy. I could care less about the stuff concerning Armagh. That's religio-political gunk. Spin. Spiritually, that makes no difference.

Amazing short story. Love the fact that it focused more on the great characters and their interactions and not so much on the special effects (although needed of course) but not to the excess. Love this approach: more story and less effects - This would make a great story by Lucasfilm and Disney - Ben Kenobi is quite a complex character. I would also recommend a movie on some species like the Wookies and their beloved Kashyyyk and their historical link with the Jedi, and especially with Yoda. Unfortunately this film left me wanting more. I know it's quite expensive to produce a 2+ hour movie, but with the appropriate funding, this team of both cast and production is quite promising. Cheers from a Star Wars Fan since 1977.

O’Meallaigh (“Vikings”) and Robert McCormack also portray Patrick at different phases of his life. “I Am Patrick” hopes to illuminate centuries of legend and myth about the life and mission of St. Patrick. The film will feature historical re-enactments, expert interviews and writings from the saint himself which details his journey from man to sainthood. “In the fifth century, the Roman empire was collapsing, and barbarians threatened civilization. In Britain, a teenager named Patrick was living a comfortable life as the son of a government official. Despite being part of the Roman Catholic Church, his faith didn’t mean anything to him until he was kidnapped by pirates at the age of 16 and enslaved at the edge of the known world–Ireland. For six years, Patrick was forced to work as a shepherd and was driven to the brink of starvation. It was there he turned to his Christian faith and through divine intervention managed to escape. He was reunited with his family in Britain only to have a prophetic dream calling him to take Christianity back to the land of his captivity, ” the film synopsis reads. “Against the wishes of his family and the Church, Patrick returned as a missionary bishop to Ireland and converted thousands to Christianity. He opposed slavers, Irish kings and possibly Druids but nothing compared to the hostility he faced from his fellow Christians. After a close friend exposed a dark secret of Patrick’s, it is believed he was ordered to leave his mission and return to Britain. Patrick had to choose – obey God or obey man? ”  “I Am Patrick” will be in theaters for two days only, March 17-18, 2020, by Fathom Events. “From a life of comfort to enslavement to a faith that changed a nation, this is the true story of the saint you thought you knew, ” said writer, director Anderson in a statement shared with The Christian Post. On 17 March, people around the world will celebrate St Patrick’s Day by parading in green hats, sporting images of shamrocks and leprechauns – tiny, grinning, fairies of Irish folklore – pinned to their lapels. Patrick’s picture will adorn greeting cards: an aged, bearded bishop in flowing robes, grasping a bishop’s staff and glaring at a coil of snakes. The icon refers to one of Patrick’s legendary miracles in which he is said to have prayed to banish all snakes from Ireland. However, as a historian of medieval Ireland, I can assure you that the real St Patrick, who lived and worked in the fifth century, never saw a snake or wore a shamrock. Patrick’s own writings and early accounts of the saint’s career reveal many interesting details about the life of this patron saint of Ireland. Here are 10 things you may not know about St Patrick. Download the new Independent Premium app Sharing the full story, not just the headlines 1. Patrick was not Irish Patrick was born around 450AD, just when Roman troops withdrew from Britain. His father was a gentleman and a Christian deacon who owned a small estate in a place called Bannavem Taburniae. Scholars aren’t sure where this place was – it was probably on the west coast around Bristol, near the southern border of modern Wales and England. 2. Patrick was a slave Irish slave traders sailed the waters off that same coast, and one day they came ashore to capture the teenage Patrick and his neighbours, to sell back in Ireland. Patrick spent six years tending sheep in the west of Ireland. 3. Patrick heard voices While chasing sheep on the hills, Patrick prayed a hundred times a day, in all kinds of weather. It apparently paid off: one night a mysterious voice called to him, saying: “Look, your ship is ready! ” Patrick knew he wasn’t hearing sheep. The time was right for his escape. 4. Patrick refused to ‘suck a man’s breasts’ Patrick made his way to Ireland’s east coast and sought passage on a ship bound for Britain. The captain, a pagan, didn’t like the look of him and demanded that Patrick “suck his breasts”, a ritual gesture symbolising acceptance of the captain’s authority. Patrick refused – instead he tried to convert the crew. For some reason, the captain still took him aboard. left Created with Sketch. right 5. Patrick had visions One night Patrick dreamed that Satan tested his faith by dropping an enormous rock on him. He lay crushed by its weight until dawn broke, when he called out: “Helias! Helias! ” – the name of the Greek sun god. The rock disappeared. Patrick took it as a kind of epiphany. He later wrote: “I believe that I was helped by Christ the Lord. ” Patrick had other peculiar visions, too. Back home at Bannavem Taburniae, he was visited by an angel with a message from the Irish: “We beg you, holy boy, to come and walk again among us. ” He trained as a bishop and went back to Ireland. 6. Patrick did something unmentionable Years into his mission, someone, it seems, told a dirty secret about Patrick to his fellow bishops. “They brought up against me after thirty years something I had already confessed... some things I had done one day – rather, in one hour, when I was young, ” he wrote. Patrick did not tell us what he did – worship idols? Engage in a forbidden sexual practice? Take gifts from converts? Whatever it was, Patrick retrospectively understood his zealous Irish mission to be penance for his youthful sins. While he spread Christianity around Ireland, he was often beaten, put in chains or extorted. “Every day there is the chance that I will be killed, or surrounded, or taken into slavery, ” he complained. 7. Patrick duelled with druids Two centuries after his death, Irish believers wanted more exciting stories of Patrick’s life than the saint’s own account. One legend (written 700AD) described Patrick’s contest with native religious leaders, the druids. The druids insulted Patrick, tried to poison him and engaged him in magical duels – much like students of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts – in which they competed to manipulate the weather, destroy each other’s sacred books and survive raging fires. When one druid dared to blaspheme the Christian God, however, Patrick sent the druid flying into the air – the man dropped to the ground and broke his skull. 8. Patrick made God promise Another legend from around the same time tells how Patrick fasted for 40 days atop a mountain, weeping, throwing things and refusing to descend until an angel came on God’s behalf to grant the saint’s outrageous demands. These included the following: Patrick would redeem more souls from hell than any other saint; Patrick, rather than God, would judge Irish sinners at the end of time and the English would never rule Ireland. We know how that last one worked out. Perhaps God will keep the other two promises. 9. Patrick never mentioned a shamrock None of the early Patrician stories featured the shamrock – or Irish seamrog – which is a word for common clover, a small plant with three leaves. Yet children in Catholic schools still learn that Patrick used a shamrock as a symbol of the Christian Trinity when he preached to the heathen Irish. The shamrock connection was first mentioned in print by an English visitor to Ireland in 1684, who wrote that on Saint Patrick’s feast day: “The vulgar superstitiously wear shamroges, three-leav’d grass, which they likewise eat (they say) to cause a sweet breath. ” The Englishman also noted that “very few of the zealous are found sober at night”. 10. Patrick did not drive the snakes out of Ireland As for the miraculous snake-charming attributed to Patrick, it could not have happened because there were no snakes in pre-modern Ireland. Reptiles never made it across the land bridge that prehistorically linked the island to the European continent. Most likely, the miracle was plagiarised from some other saint’s life and eventually added to Patrick’s repertoire. Partygoers on 17 March need not worry about ancient historical details, though. Whatever the truth of Patrick’s mission, he became one of the three patrons of Ireland, along with Saints Brigid and Columba – the latter two were born in Ireland. The holiday, which is also referred to as the Feast of Saint Patrick or Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Irish,  is a cultural and religious celebration of the death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick was a fifth century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Most of what is known about him comes from the  Declaration,  which is an autobiography thought to be written by Saint Patrick himself. It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian church. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland.  It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he found God. The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest. According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. He died on March 17 and was buried at Downpatrick. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilís (a form of Irish folk dancing), and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Allegedly, Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans. Many Christians also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. St Patrick's Day parades began in North America in the 18th century but did not spread to Ireland until the 20th century. Over time, many of the parades have become more akin to a carnival. More effort has also been made to use the Irish language, especially in Ireland, where the week of St Patrick's Day is Irish language week. Learn more about Saint Patrick's Day with the books below. The Patron Saint of Ireland was born into either a Scottish or English family in the fourth century. He was captured as a teenager by Niall of the Nine Hostages who was to become a King of all Ireland. He was sold into slavery in Ireland and put to work as a shepherd. He worked in terrible conditions for six years drawing comfort in the Christian faith that so many of his people had abandoned under Roman rule. Patrick had a dream that encouraged him to flee his captivity and to head South where a ship was to be waiting for him. He travelled over 200 miles from his Northern captivity to Wexford town where, sure enough, a ship was waiting to enable his escape. Upon arrival in England he was captured by brigands and returned to slavery. He escaped after two months and spent the next seven years travelling Europe seeking his destiny. During this time he furthered his education and studied Christianity in the Lerin Monastery in France. He returned to England as a priest. Again a dream greatly influenced him when he became convinced that the Irish people were calling out to him to return to the land of his servitude. He went to the Monastery in Auxerre where it was decided that a mission should be sent to Ireland. Patrick was not selected for this task to his great disappointment. The monk that was selected was called Paladius, but he died before he could reach Ireland and a second mission was decided upon. Patrick was made a Bishop by Pope Celestine in the year 432 and, together with a small band of followers, travelled to Ireland to commence the conversion. Patrick confronted the most powerful man in Ireland Laoghaire, The High King of Tara as he knew that if he could gain his support that he would be safe to spread the word throughout Ireland. To get his attention Patrick and his followers lit a huge fire to mark the commencement of Spring. Tradition had it that no fire was to be lit until the Kings fire was complete, but Patrick defied this rule and courted the confrontation with the King. The King rushed into action and travelled with the intention of making war on the holy delegation. Patrick calmed the King and with quiet composure impressed the King that he had no other intention than that of spreading the word of the Gospel. The King accepted the missionary, much to the dismay of the Druids who feared for their own power and position in the face of this new threat. They commanded that he make snow fall. Patrick declined to do so stating that this was Gods work. Immediately it began to snow, only stopping when Patrick blessed himself. Still trying to convince the King of his religion Patrick grasped at some Shamrock growing on the ground. He explained that there was but one stem on the plant, but three branches of the leaf, representing the Blessed Trinity. The King was impressed with his sincerity and granted him permission to spread the word of his faith, although he did not convert to Christianity himself. Patrick and his followers were free to spread their faith throughout Ireland and did so to great effect. He drove paganism (symbolised by the snake) from the lands of Eireann. Patrick was tempted by the Devil whilst on a pilgrimage at Croagh Patrick. For his refusal to be tempted, God rewarded him with a wish. Patrick asked that the Irish be spared the horror of Judgement Day and that he himself be allowed to judge his flock. Thus, the legend that Ireland will disappear under a sea of water seven years before the final judgement, was born. Patrick died on March 17th in the year 461 at the age of 76. It is not known for sure where his remains were laid although Downpatrick in County Down in the North of Ireland is thought to be his final resting place. His influence is still felt to this day as Nations the world over commemorate him on March 17th of every year.

Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, the other patron saints being Brigit of Kildare and Columba. He is venerated in the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Lutheran Churches, the Old Catholic Church, and in the Eastern Orthodox Church as equal-to-the-apostles and Enlightener of Ireland. [2] The dates of Patrick's life cannot be fixed with certainty, but there is broad agreement that he was active as a missionary in Ireland during the fifth century. Nevertheless, as the most recent biography [3] on Patrick shows, a late fourth-century date for the saint is not impossible. [4] Early medieval tradition credits him with being the first bishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland, and regards him as the founder of Christianity in Ireland, converting a society practising a form of Celtic polytheism. He has been generally so regarded ever since, despite evidence of some earlier Christian presence in Ireland. According to the autobiographical Confessio of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals; he lived there for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemnity and a holy day of obligation; it is also a celebration of Ireland itself. Sources Two Latin works survive which are generally accepted as having been written by St. Patrick. These are the Declaration ( Latin: Confessio) [5] and the Letter to the soldiers of Coroticus ( Latin: Epistola), [6] from which come the only generally accepted details of his life. [7] The Declaration is the more biographical of the two. In it, Patrick gives a short account of his life and his mission. Most available details of his life are from subsequent hagiographies and annals, which have considerable value but lack the empiricism scholars depend on today. [8] Name The only name that Patrick uses for himself in his own writings is Pātricius [paːˈtrɪʊs], which gives Old Irish Pátraic [ˈpaːtraiɡʲ] and Modern Irish Pádraig ( [ˈpˠaːd̪ˠɾˠəɟ]); English Patrick; Welsh Padrig; Cornish Petroc. Hagiography records other names he is said to have borne. Tírechán 's seventh-century Collectanea gives: "Magonus, that is, famous; Succetus, that is, god of war; Patricius, that is, father of the citizens; Cothirthiacus, because he served four houses of druids. " [9] "Magonus" appears in the ninth century Historia Brittonum as Maun, descending from British *Magunos, meaning "servant-lad". [9] "Succetus", which also appears in Muirchú moccu Machtheni 's seventh century Life as Sochet, [9] is identified by Mac Neill as "a word of British origin meaning swineherd". [10] Cothirthiacus also appears as Cothraige in the 8th century biographical poem known as Fiacc's Hymn and a variety of other spellings elsewhere, and is taken to represent a Primitive Irish *Qatrikias, although this is disputed. Harvey argues that Cothraige "has the form of a classic Old Irish tribal (and therefore place-) name", noting that Ail Coithrigi is a name for the Rock of Cashel, and the place-names Cothrugu and Catrige are attested in Counties Antrim and Carlow. [11] Dating The reputed burial place of Saint Patrick in Downpatrick The dates of Patrick's life are uncertain; there are conflicting traditions regarding the year of his death. His own writings provide no evidence for any dating more precise than the 5th century generally. His Biblical quotations are a mixture of the Old Latin version and the Vulgate, completed in the early 5th century, suggesting he was writing "at the point of transition from Old Latin to Vulgate", [12] although it is possible the Vulgate readings may have been added later, replacing earlier readings. [13] The Letter to Coroticus implies that the Franks were still pagans at the time of writing: [14] their conversion to Christianity is dated to the period 496–508. [15] The Irish annals for the fifth century date Patrick's arrival in Ireland at 432, but they were compiled in the mid 6th century at the earliest. [14] The date 432 was probably chosen to minimise the contribution of Palladius, who was known to have been sent to Ireland in 431, and maximise that of Patrick. [16] A variety of dates are given for his death. In 457 "the elder Patrick" ( Irish: Patraic Sen) is said to have died: this may refer to the death of Palladius, who according to the Book of Armagh was also called Patrick. [16] In 461/2 the annals say that "Here some record the repose of Patrick"; [17]: 19 in 492/3 they record the death of "Patrick, the arch-apostle (or archbishop and apostle) of the Scoti", on 17 March, at the age of 120. [17]: 31 While some modern historians [18] accept the earlier date of c. 460 for Patrick's death, scholars of early Irish history tend to prefer a later date, c. 493. Supporting the later date, the annals record that in 553 "the relics of Patrick were placed sixty years after his death in a shrine by Colum Cille " (emphasis added). [19] The death of Patrick's disciple Mochta is dated in the annals to 535 or 537, [19] [20] and the early hagiographies "all bring Patrick into contact with persons whose obits occur at the end of the fifth century or the beginning of the sixth". [21] However, E. A. Thompson argues that none of the dates given for Patrick's death in the Annals are reliable. [22] A recent biography argues that a late fourth-century date for the saint is not impossible. [23]: 34–35 "Two Patricks" theory Irish academic T. F. O'Rahilly proposed the "Two Patricks" theory, [24] which suggests that many of the traditions later attached to Saint Patrick actually concerned the aforementioned Palladius, who Prosper of Aquitaine 's Chronicle says was sent by Pope Celestine I as the first bishop to Irish Christians in 431. Palladius was not the only early cleric in Ireland at this time. The Irish-born Saint Ciarán of Saigir lived in the later fourth century (352–402) and was the first bishop of Ossory. Ciaran, along with saints Auxilius, Secundinus and Iserninus, is also associated with early churches in Munster and Leinster. By this reading, Palladius was active in Ireland until the 460s. [25] Prosper associates Palladius' appointment with the visits of Germanus of Auxerre to Britain to suppress Pelagianism and it has been suggested that Palladius and his colleagues were sent to Ireland to ensure that exiled Pelagians did not establish themselves among the Irish Christians. The appointment of Palladius and his fellow-bishops was not obviously a mission to convert the Irish, but more probably intended to minister to existing Christian communities in Ireland. [26] The sites of churches associated with Palladius and his colleagues are close to royal centres of the period: Secundus is remembered by Dunshaughlin, County Meath, close to the Hill of Tara which is associated with the High King of Ireland; Killashee, County Kildare, close to Naas with links with the kings of Leinster, is probably named for Auxilius. This activity was limited to the southern half of Ireland, and there is no evidence for them in Ulster or Connacht. [27] Although the evidence for contacts with Gaul is clear, the borrowings from Latin into Old Irish show that links with Roman Britain were many. [28] Iserninus, who appears to be of the generation of Palladius, is thought to have been a Briton, and is associated with the lands of the Uí Ceinnselaig in Leinster. The Palladian mission should not be contrasted with later "British" missions, but forms a part of them; [29] nor can the work of Palladius be uncritically equated with that of Saint Patrick, as was once traditional. [24] Life Patrick was born in Roman Britain. His birthplace is not known with any certainty; some traditions place it in England—one identifying it as Glannoventa (modern Ravenglass in Cumbria) [30] —but claims have also been advanced for locations in both present-day Scotland [31] and Wales. [32] His father, Calpurnius, was a decurion and deacon, his grandfather Potitus was a priest from Bonaven Tabernia, [33] Patrick, however, was not an active believer. According to the Confession of Saint Patrick, at the age of sixteen he was captured by a group of Irish pirates. [34] They took him to Ireland where he was enslaved and held captive for six years. Patrick writes in the Confession [34] that the time he spent in captivity was critical to his spiritual development. He explains that the Lord had mercy on his youth and ignorance, and afforded him the opportunity to be forgiven his sins and convert to Christianity. While in captivity, he worked as a shepherd and strengthened his relationship with God through prayer, eventually leading him to convert to Christianity. [34] After six years of captivity he heard a voice telling him that he would soon go home, and then that his ship was ready. Fleeing his master, he travelled to a port, two hundred miles away, [35] where he found a ship and with difficulty persuaded the captain to take him. After three days' sailing, they landed, presumably in Britain, and apparently all left the ship, walking for 28 days in a "wilderness" and becoming faint from hunger. After Patrick prayed for sustenance, they encountered a herd of wild boar; [36] since this was shortly after Patrick had urged them to put their faith in God, his prestige in the group was greatly increased. After various adventures, he returned home to his family, now in his early twenties. [37] After returning home to Britain, Patrick continued to study Christianity. Patrick recounts that he had a vision a few years after returning home: I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: "The Voice of the Irish". As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea—and they cried out, as with one voice: "We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us. " [38] A. B. E. Hood suggests that the Victoricus of St. Patrick's vision may be identified with Saint Victricius, bishop of Rouen in the late fourth century, who had visited Britain in an official capacity in 396. [39] However, Ludwig Bieler disagrees. [40] He studied in Europe principally at Auxerre, but is thought to have visited the Marmoutier Abbey, Tours and to have received the tonsure at Lérins Abbey. Saint Germanus of Auxerre, a bishop of the Western Church, ordained him to the priesthood. [41] [42] Acting on his vision, Patrick returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. [34] According to J. Bury, his landing place was Wicklow, Co. Wicklow, at the mouth of the river Inver-dea, which is now called the Vartry. [43] Bury suggests that Wicklow was also the port through which Patrick made his escape after his six years' captivity, though he offers only circumstantial evidence to support this. [44] Tradition has it that Patrick was not welcomed by the locals and was forced to leave and seek a more welcoming landing place further north. He rested for some days at the islands off the Skerries coast, one of which still retains the name of Inis-Patrick. The first sanctuary dedicated by Patrick was at Saul. Shortly thereafter Benin (or Benignus), son of the chieftain Secsnen, joined Patrick's group. [42] Much of the Declaration concerns charges made against Patrick by his fellow Christians at a trial. What these charges were, he does not say explicitly, but he writes that he returned the gifts which wealthy women gave him, did not accept payment for baptisms, nor for ordaining priests, and indeed paid for many gifts to kings and judges, and paid for the sons of chiefs to accompany him. It is concluded, therefore, that he was accused of some sort of financial impropriety, and perhaps of having obtained his bishopric in Ireland with personal gain in mind. [45] The condemnation might have contributed to his decision to return to Ireland. According to Patrick’s most recent biographer, Roy Flechner, the Confessio was written in part as a defence against his detractors, who did not believe that he was taken to Ireland as a slave, despite Patrick’s vigorous insistence that he was. [46] Patrick eventually returned to Ireland, probably settling in the west of the island, where, in later life, he became a bishop and ordained subordinate clerics. From this same evidence, something can be seen of Patrick's mission. He writes that he "baptised thousands of people". [47] He ordained priests to lead the new Christian communities. He converted wealthy women, some of whom became nuns in the face of family opposition. He also dealt with the sons of kings, converting them too. [48] The Confessio is generally vague about the details of his work in Ireland, though giving some specific instances. This is partly because, as he says at points, he was writing for a local audience of Christians who knew him and his work. There are several mentions of travelling around the island, and of sometimes difficult interactions with the ruling elite. He does claim of the Irish: Never before did they know of God except to serve idols and unclean things. But now, they have become the people of the Lord, and are called children of God. The sons and daughters of the leaders of the Irish are seen to be monks and virgins of Christ! [49] Patrick's position as a foreigner in Ireland was not an easy one. His refusal to accept gifts from kings placed him outside the normal ties of kinship, fosterage and affinity. Legally he was without protection, and he says that he was on one occasion beaten, robbed of all he had, and put in chains, perhaps awaiting execution. [50] Patrick says that he was also "many years later" a captive for 60 days, without giving details. [51] Murchiú's life of Saint Patrick contains a supposed prophecy by the druids which gives an impression of how Patrick and other Christian missionaries were seen by those hostile to them: Across the sea will come Adze -head, [52] crazed in the head, his cloak with hole for the head, his stick bent in the head. He will chant impieties from a table in the front of his house; all his people will answer: "so be it, so be it. " [53] The second piece of evidence that comes from Patrick's life is the Letter to Coroticus or Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, written after a first remonstrance was received with ridicule and insult. In this, Patrick writes [54] an open letter announcing that he has excommunicated Coroticus because he had taken some of Patrick's converts into slavery while raiding in Ireland. The letter describes the followers of Coroticus as "fellow citizens of the devils" and "associates of the Scots [of Dalriada and later Argyll] and Apostate Picts ". [55] Based largely on an eighth-century gloss, Coroticus is taken to be King Ceretic of Alt Clut. [56] Thompson however proposed that based on the evidence it is more likely that Coroticus was a British Roman living in Ireland. [57] It has been suggested that it was the sending of this letter which provoked the trial which Patrick mentions in the Confession. [58] Seventh-century writings An early document which is silent concerning Patrick is the letter of Columbanus to Pope Boniface IV of about 613. Columbanus writes that Ireland's Christianity "was first handed to us by you, the successors of the holy apostles", apparently referring to Palladius only, and ignoring Patrick. [59] Writing on the Easter controversy in 632 or 633, Cummian—it is uncertain whether this is Cumméne Fota, associated with Clonfert, or Cumméne Find —does refer to Patrick, calling him "our papa"; that is, pope or primate. [60] Two works by late seventh-century hagiographers of Patrick have survived. These are the writings of Tírechán and the Vita sancti Patricii of Muirchú moccu Machtheni. [61] Both writers relied upon an earlier work, now lost, the Book of Ultán. [62] This Ultán, probably the same person as Ultan of Ardbraccan, was Tírechán's foster-father. His obituary is given in the Annals of Ulster under the year 657. [63] These works thus date from a century and a half after Patrick's death. Tírechán writes, "I found four names for Patrick written in the book of Ultán, bishop of the tribe of Conchobar: holy Magonus (that is, "famous"); Succetus (that is, the god of war); Patricius (that is, father of the citizens); Cothirtiacus (because he served four houses of druids). " [64] Muirchu records much the same information, adding that "[h]is mother was named Concessa". [65] The name Cothirtiacus, however, is simply the Latinized form of Old Irish Cothraige, which is the Q-Celtic form of Latin Patricius. [66] The Patrick portrayed by Tírechán and Muirchu is a martial figure, who contests with druids, overthrows pagan idols, and curses kings and kingdoms. [67] On occasion, their accounts contradict Patrick's own writings: Tírechán states that Patrick accepted gifts from female converts although Patrick himself flatly denies this. However, the emphasis Tírechán and Muirchu placed on female converts, and in particular royal and noble women who became nuns, is thought to be a genuine insight into Patrick's work of conversion. Patrick also worked with the unfree and the poor, encouraging them to vows of monastic chastity. Tírechán's account suggests that many early Patrician churches were combined with nunneries founded by Patrick's noble female converts. [68] The martial Patrick found in Tírechán and Muirchu, and in later accounts, echoes similar figures found during the conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity. It may be doubted whether such accounts are an accurate representation of Patrick's time, although such violent events may well have occurred as Christians gained in strength and numbers. [69] Much of the detail supplied by Tírechán and Muirchu, in particular the churches established by Patrick, and the monasteries founded by his converts, may relate to the situation in the seventh century, when the churches which claimed ties to Patrick, and in particular Armagh, were expanding their influence throughout Ireland in competition with the church of Kildare. In the same period, Wilfred, Archbishop of York, claimed to speak, as metropolitan archbishop, "for all the northern part of Britain and of Ireland" at a council held in Rome in the time of Pope Agatho, thus claiming jurisdiction over the Irish church. [70] Other presumed early materials include the Irish annals, which contain records from the Chronicle of Ireland. These sources have conflated Palladius and Patrick. [71] Another early document is the so-called First Synod of Saint Patrick. This is a seventh-century document, once, but no longer, taken as to contain a fifth-century original text. It apparently collects the results of several early synods, and represents an era when pagans were still a major force in Ireland. The introduction attributes it to Patrick, Auxilius, and Iserninus, a claim which "cannot be taken at face value. " [72] Patrick uses shamrock in an illustrative parable Patrick depicted with shamrock in detail of stained glass window in St. Benin's Church, Kilbennan, County Galway, Ireland Legend credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a three-leafed plant, using it to illustrate the Christian teaching of three persons in one God. [73] [74] This story first appears in writing in 1726, though it may be older. The shamrock has since become a central symbol for Saint Patrick's Day. In pagan Ireland, three was a significant number and the Irish had many triple deities, a fact that may have aided Patrick in his evangelisation efforts when he "held up a shamrock and discoursed on the Christian Trinity". [75] [76] Patricia Monaghan says there is no evidence that the shamrock was sacred to the pagan Irish. [75] However, Jack Santino speculates that it may have represented the regenerative powers of nature, and was recast in a Christian context. Icons of St Patrick often depict the saint "with a cross in one hand and a sprig of shamrocks in the other". [77] Roger Homan writes, "We can perhaps see St Patrick drawing upon the visual concept of the triskele when he uses the shamrock to explain the Trinity". [78] Patrick banishes all snakes from Ireland The absence of snakes in Ireland has been noted from as early as the third century by Gaius Julius Solinus, but later legend has attributed the banishment of all reptiles from the island to Patrick. As Roy Flechner shows in his biography, the earliest text to mention an Irish saint banishing snakes from Ireland is in fact the Life of Saint Columba (chapter 3. 23), written in the late seventh or early eighth century. [79] The earliest written record of a legend about Patrick ridding Ireland of venomous creatures date to the thirteenth century by Gerald of Wales, who expressed scepticism about the veracity of the story. [80] The more familiar version of the legend is given by Jocelyn of Furness, who says that the snakes had all been banished by Patrick [81] chasing them into the sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast he was undertaking on top of a hill. [82] The hagiographic theme of banishing snakes may draw on the Biblical account of the staff of the prophet Moses. In Exodus 7:8–7:13, Moses and Aaron use their staffs in their struggle with Pharaoh's sorcerers, the staffs of each side turning into snakes. Aaron's snake-staff prevails by consuming the other snakes. [83] Patrick banishing the snakes However, all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. [82] "At no time has there ever been any suggestion of snakes in Ireland, so [there was] nothing for St. Patrick to banish", says naturalist Nigel Monaghan, keeper of natural history at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin, who has searched extensively through Irish fossil collections and records. [82] The snakes, rather, were a metaphor for the druids, whom Patrick is said to have driven out of Ireland when he established Christianity there. [84] Patrick's walking stick grows into a living tree Some Irish legends involve the Oilliphéist, the Caoránach, and the Copóg Phádraig. During his evangelising journey back to Ireland from his parents' home, he is understood to have carried with him an ash wood walking stick or staff. He thrust this stick into the ground wherever he was evangelising and at the place now known as Aspatria (ash of Patrick), the message of the dogma took so long to get through to the people there that the stick had taken root by the time he was ready to move on. Patrick speaks with ancient Irish ancestors The twelfth-century work Acallam na Senórach tells of Patrick being met by two ancient warriors, Caílte mac Rónáin and Oisín, during his evangelical travels. The two were once members of Fionn mac Cumhaill 's warrior band the Fianna, and somehow survived to Patrick's time. [85] In the work St. Patrick seeks to convert the warriors to Christianity, while they defend their pagan past. The heroic pagan lifestyle of the warriors, of fighting and feasting and living close to nature, is contrasted with the more peaceful, but unheroic and non-sensual life offered by Christianity. [ citation needed] Folk piety The version of the details of his life generally accepted by modern scholars, [ dubious – discuss] as elaborated by later sources, popular writers and folk piety, typically [ improper synthesis? ] includes extra details such that Patrick, originally named Maewyn Succat, was born in 387 AD in (among other candidate locations, see above) Banna venta Berniae [86] to the parents Calpernius and Conchessa. At the age of 16 in 403 AD Patrick was captured and enslaved by the Irish and was sent to Ireland to serve as a slave herding and tending sheep in Dalriada. [87] During his time in captivity Patrick became fluent in the Irish language and culture. After six years, Patrick escaped captivity after hearing a voice urging him to travel to a distant port where a ship would be waiting to take him back to Britain. [88] On his way back to Britain, Patrick was captured again and spent 60 days in captivity in Tours, France. During his short captivity within France, Patrick learned about French monasticism. At the end of his second captivity Patrick had a vision of Victoricus giving him the quest of bringing Christianity to Ireland. [89] Following his second captivity Patrick returned to Ireland and, using the knowledge of Irish language and culture that he had gained during his first captivity, brought Christianity and monasticism to Ireland in the form of more than 300 churches and over 100, 000 Irish baptised. [90] According to the Annals of the Four Masters, an early-modern compilation of earlier annals, his corpse soon became an object of conflict in the Battle for the Body of Saint Patrick ( Cath Coirp Naomh Padraic): The Uí Néill and the Airgíalla attempted to bring it to Armagh; the Ulaid tried to keep it for themselves. When the Uí Néill and the Airgíalla came to a certain water, the river swelled against them so that they were not able to cross it. When the flood had subsided the Ui Neill and the Ulaid united on terms of peace, to bring the body of Patrick with them. It appeared to each of them that each had the body conveying it to their respective territories. The body of Patrick was afterwards interred at Dun Da Lethglas with great honour and veneration; and during the twelve nights that the religious seniors were watching the body with psalms and hymns, it was not night in Magh Inis or the neighbouring lands, as they thought, but as if it were the full undarkened light of day. [91] Abduction reinterpreted According to Patrick's own account, it was Irish raiders who brought him to Ireland where he was enslaved and held captive for six years. [92] However, a recent alternative interpretation of Patrick's departure to Ireland suggests that, as the son of a decurion, he would have been obliged by Roman law to serve on the town council ( curia), but chose instead to abscond from the onerous obligations of this office by fleeing abroad, as many others in his position had done in what has become known as the 'flight of the curiales '. [93] Roy Flechner also asserts the improbability of an escape from servitude and journey of the kind that Patrick purports to have undertaken. He also draws attention to the biblical allusions in Patrick's own account (e. g. the theme of freedom after six years of servitude in Exod. 21:2 or Jer. 34:14), which imply that perhaps parts of the account may not have been intended to be understood literally. [94] Saint Patrick's crosses Patrick showing cross pattée on his robes There are two main types of crosses associated with Patrick, the cross pattée and the Saltire. The cross pattée is the more traditional association, while the association with the saltire dates from 1783 and the Order of St. Patrick. The cross pattée has long been associated with Patrick, for reasons that are uncertain. One possible reason is that bishops' mitres in Ecclesiastical heraldry often appear surmounted by a cross pattée. [95] [96] An example of this can be seen on the old crest of the Brothers of St. [97] As Patrick was the founding bishop of the Irish church, the symbol may have become associated with him. Patrick is traditionally portrayed in the vestments of a bishop, and his mitre and garments are often decorated with a cross pattée. [98] [99] [100] [101] [102] The cross pattée retains its link to Patrick to the present day. For example, it appears on the coat of arms of both the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Armagh [103] and the Church of Ireland Archdiocese of Armagh. [104] This is on account of Patrick being regarded as the first bishop of the Diocese of Armagh. It is also used by Down District Council which has its headquarters in Downpatrick, the reputed burial place of Patrick. Saint Patrick's Saltire is a red saltire on a white field. It is used in the insignia of the Order of Saint Patrick, established in 1783, and after the Acts of Union 1800 it was combined with the Saint George's Cross of England and the Saint Andrew's Cross of Scotland to form the Union Flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. A saltire was intermittently used as a symbol of Ireland from the seventeenth century, but without reference to Patrick. Traditional Saint Patrick's Day badges from the early twentieth century, from the Museum of Country Life, Castlebar It was formerly a common custom to wear a cross made of paper or ribbon on St Patrick's Day. Surviving examples of such badges come in many colours [105] and they were worn upright rather than as saltires. [106] Thomas Dinely, an English traveller in Ireland in 1681, remarked that "the Irish of all stations and condicõns were crosses in their hatts, some of pins, some of green ribbon. " [107] Jonathan Swift, writing to " Stella " of Saint Patrick's Day 1713, said " the Mall was so full of crosses that I thought all the world was Irish". [108] In the 1740s, the badges pinned were multicoloured interlaced fabric. [109] In the 1820s, they were only worn by children, with simple multicoloured daisy patterns. [109] [110] In the 1890s, they were almost extinct, and a simple green Greek cross inscribed in a circle of paper (similar to the Ballina crest pictured). [111] The Irish Times in 1935 reported they were still sold in poorer parts of Dublin, but fewer than those of previous years "some in velvet or embroidered silk or poplin, with the gold paper cross entwined with shamrocks and ribbons". [112] Saint Patrick's Bell The Shrine of St. Patrick's Bell The National Museum of Ireland in Dublin possesses a bell ( Clog Phádraig) [113] [115] first mentioned, according to the Annals of Ulster, in the Book of Cuanu in the year 552. The bell was part of a collection of "relics of Patrick" removed from his tomb sixty years after his death by Colum Cille to be used as relics. The bell is described as "The Bell of the Testament", one of three relics of "precious minna" (extremely valuable items), of which the other two are described as Patrick's goblet and "The Angels Gospel". Colum Cille is described to have been under the direction of an "Angel" for whom he sent the goblet to Down, the bell to Armagh, and kept possession of the Angel's Gospel for himself. The name Angels Gospel is given to the book because it was supposed that Colum Cille received it from the angel's hand. A stir was caused in 1044 when two kings, in some dispute over the bell, went on spates of prisoner taking and cattle theft. The annals make one more apparent reference to the bell when chronicling a death, of 1356: "Solomon Ua Mellain, The Keeper of The Bell of the Testament, protector, rested in Christ. " The bell was encased in a "bell shrine", a distinctive Irish type of reliquary made for it, as an inscription records, by King Domnall Ua Lochlainn sometime between 1091 and 1105. The shrine is an important example of the final, Viking-influenced, style of Irish Celtic art, with intricate Urnes style decoration in gold and silver. The Gaelic inscription on the shrine also records the name of the maker "U INMAINEN" (which translates to "Noonan"), "who with his sons enriched/decorated it"; metalwork was often inscribed for remembrance. The bell itself is simple in design, hammered into shape with a small handle fixed to the top with rivets. Originally forged from iron, it has since been coated in bronze. The shrine is inscribed with three names, including King Domnall Ua Lochlainn's. The rear of the shrine, not intended to be seen, is decorated with crosses while the handle is decorated with, among other work, Celtic designs of birds. The bell is accredited with working a miracle in 1044 and having been coated in bronze to shield it from human eyes, for which it would be too holy. It measures 12. 5 × 10 cm at the base, 12. 8 × 4 cm at the shoulder, 16. 5 cm from base to shoulder, 3. 3 cm from shoulder to top of handle and weighs 1. 7 kg. [116] Saint Patrick's Breastplate Saint Patrick's Breastplate is a lorica, or hymn, which is attributed to Patrick during his Irish ministry in the 5th century. Saint Patrick and Irish identity Logo of Down District Council showing the cross pattée Patrick features in many stories in the Irish oral tradition and there are many customs connected with his feast day. The folklorist Jenny Butler [117] discusses how these traditions have been given new layers of meaning over time while also becoming tied to Irish identity both in Ireland and abroad. The symbolic resonance of the Saint Patrick figure is complex and multifaceted, stretching from that of Christianity's arrival in Ireland to an identity that encompasses everything Irish. In some portrayals, the saint is symbolically synonymous with the Christian religion itself. There is also evidence of a combination of indigenous religious traditions with that of Christianity, which places St Patrick in the wider framework of cultural hybridity. Popular religious expression has this characteristic feature of merging elements of culture. Later in time, the saint becomes associated specifically with Catholic Ireland and synonymously with Irish national identity. Subsequently, Saint Patrick is a patriotic symbol along with the colour green and the shamrock. Saint Patrick's Day celebrations include many traditions that are known to be relatively recent historically, but have endured through time because of their association either with religious or national identity. They have persisted in such a way that they have become stalwart traditions, viewed as the strongest "Irish traditions". Sainthood and modern remembrance Icon of Saint Patrick from Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, Wayne, WV. 17 March, popularly known as Saint Patrick's Day, is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his Feast Day. [118] The day became a feast day in the Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford -born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding, as a member of the commission for the reform of the Breviary in the early part of the seventeenth century. [119] For most of Christianity's first thousand years, canonisations were done on the diocesan or regional level. Relatively soon after the death of people considered very holy, the local Church affirmed that they could be liturgically celebrated as saints. As a result, Patrick has never been formally canonised by a Pope; nevertheless, various Christian churches declare that he is a Saint in Heaven (he is in the List of Saints). He is still widely venerated in Ireland and elsewhere today. [120] Patrick is honoured with a feast day on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA) and with a commemoration on the calendar of Evangelical Lutheran Worship, both on 17 March. Patrick is also venerated in the Orthodox Church, especially among English-speaking Orthodox Christians living in Ireland, the UK and in the US. [121] There are Orthodox icons dedicated to him. [122] Patrick is said to be buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down, alongside Saint Brigid and Saint Columba, although this has never been proven. Saint Patrick Visitor Centre is a modern exhibition complex located in Downpatrick and is a permanent interpretative exhibition centre featuring interactive displays on the life and story of Patrick. It provides the only permanent exhibition centre in the world devoted to Patrick. [123] Places associated with Saint Patrick Saint Patrick's statue at Saul, County Down Slemish, County Antrim and Killala Bay, County Mayo When captured by raiders, there are two theories as to where Patrick was enslaved. One theory is that he herded sheep in the countryside around Slemish. Another theory is that Patrick herded sheep near Killala Bay, at a place called Fochill. Saul, County Down (from Irish: Sabhall Phádraig, meaning "Patrick's barn") [124] It is claimed that Patrick founded his first church in a barn at Saul, which was donated to him by a local chieftain called Dichu. It is also claimed that Patrick died at Saul or was brought there between his death and burial. Nearby, on the crest of Slieve Patrick, is a huge statue of Patrick with bronze panels showing scenes from his life. Hill of Slane, County Meath Muirchu moccu Machtheni, in his highly mythologised seventh-century Life of Patrick, says that Patrick lit a Paschal fire on this hilltop in 433 in defiance of High King Laoire. The story says that the fire could not be doused by anyone but Patrick, and it was here that he explained the holy trinity using the shamrock. Croagh Patrick, County Mayo (from Irish: Cruach Phádraig, meaning "Patrick's stack") [125] It is claimed that Patrick climbed this mountain and fasted on its summit for the forty days of Lent. Croagh Patrick draws thousands of pilgrims who make the trek to the top on the last Sunday in July. Lough Derg, County Donegal (from Irish: Loch Dearg, meaning "red lake") [126] It is claimed that Patrick killed a large serpent on this lake and that its blood turned the water red (hence the name). Each August, pilgrims spend three days fasting and praying there on Station Island. Armagh, County Armagh It is claimed that Patrick founded a church here and proclaimed it to be the most holy church in Ireland. Armagh is today the primary seat of both the Catholic Church in Ireland and the Church of Ireland, and both cathedrals in the town are named after Patrick. Downpatrick, County Down (from Irish: Dún Pádraig, meaning "Patrick's stronghold") [127] It is claimed that Patrick was brought here after his death and buried in the grounds of Down Cathedral. Stone found below St. Patrick's Well. St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland. Other places named after Saint Patrick include: Patrickswell Lane, a well in Drogheda Town where St. Patrick opened a monastery and baptised the townspeople. Ardpatrick, County Limerick (from Irish: Ard Pádraig, meaning "high place of Patrick") [128] Patrick Water (Old Patrick Water), Elderslie, Renfrewshire. from Scots' Gaelic "AlltPadraig" meaning Patrick's Burn [129] [130] [131] [132] Patrickswell or Toberpatrick, County Limerick (from Irish: Tobar Phádraig, meaning "Patrick's well") [133] St Patrick's Chapel, Heysham St Patrick's Island, County Dublin Old Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, Scotland from "Cill Phàdraig, " Patrick's Church, a claimant to his birthplace St Patrick's Isle, off the Isle of Man St. Patricks, Newfoundland and Labrador, a community in the Baie Verte district of Newfoundland Llanbadrig (church), Ynys Badrig (island), Porth Padrig (cove), Llyn Padrig (lake), and Rhosbadrig (heath) on the island of Anglesey in Wales Templepatrick, County Antrim (from Irish: Teampall Phádraig, meaning "Patrick's church") [134] St Patrick's Hill, Liverpool, on old maps of the town near to the former location of "St Patrick's Cross" [135] Parroquia San Patricio y Espiritu Santo. The actual building was completed by 1729, is one of the oldest churches in the Americas and today represents the faith of many Irish immigrants that settled in Loiza by the end of the 18th century. Today it is a museum. In literature Robert Southey wrote a ballad called "Saint Patrick's Purgatory", based on popular legends surrounding the saint's name. Patrick is mentioned in a 17th-century ballad about " Saint George and the Dragon " Stephen R. Lawhead wrote the fictional Patrick: Son of Ireland loosely based on the saint's life, including imagined accounts of training as a druid and service in the Roman army before his conversion. [136] The 1999 historical novel Let Me Die in Ireland by Anabaptist author and attorney David Bercot is based on the documented facts of Patrick's life rather than the legend, and suggests implications of his example for Christians today. [137] In film St. Patrick: The Irish Legend is a 2000 television historical drama film about the saint's life. Patrick is portrayed by Patrick Bergin. At 16, St. Patrik was abducted and taken to Ireland as a slave. Saint Patrick, a patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. Every year on March 17, many countries around the world celebrate Saint Patrick's Day in observance of the death of the Saint. On St Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Initially a religious feast day in the 17 th century, it has evolved into a day of celebrating Irish culture with parades, music, dancing and special foods. Source: Wikimedia Commons Saint Patrick was a Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland in the fifth century. He was the patron saint of Ireland and was also known as the 'Apostle of Ireland. ' At 16, he was abducted and taken to Ireland as a slave. After six years of working there as a shepherd, he returned home and became a priest. Legends of Saint Patrick Before the end of the 7 th century, Patrick had become a legendary figure, and the legends have continued to grow. According to Britannica, one of these legends has it that he drove the snakes of Ireland into the sea to their destruction. Facts about the patron saint of Ireland 1. Although St Patrick had introduced Christianity in Ireland, he was Romano-British and not Irish. 2. The world's first celebration of St. Patrick's Day took place on March 17, 1762, in America and not in Ireland. 3. St Patrick's Day is celebrated on St. Patrick's death. He was born in 385 A. D. and died on March 17, 461 AD. 4. St Patrick is not associated with green colour, but rather blue. 5. It is believed that Saint Patrick had driven all the snakes out of Ireland. However, the modern scientists suggest that Ireland is way too cold to host any reptiles. 6. St. Patrick had used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity by showing people the three-leafed plant with one stalk in order to illustrate the Christian teaching of three persons in one God. 7. Patrick's Day was celebrated as a dry holiday until 1970. The Irish law had made this day a religious holiday for the entire country, which meant the pubs were to be closed for the day. Perhaps, it is now celebrated as one of the largest drinking holidays. Interested in General Knowledge and Current Affairs?
