Whenever family life in Newcastle looks to be coming together for Ricky (Kris Hitchen) a Salford-born delivery driver for a private parcels firm, and his wife, Abby (Debbie Honeywood) a carer, it's the world of work that crushes them and pushes them ever closer to breaking point.
For both Ricky and Abby, but especially for Ricky, work is rarely rewarding or empowering. It's degrading and damaging, especially when it comes to their relationships with each other and their school-age kids, glass-half-full daughter Lisa (Katie Proctor) and vulnerable son Seb (Rhys Stone. and the mental health of them all. The film begins with Ricky signing up to a new job - dropping off parcels at breakneck speed around the city. But it's an app-driven posting - a gig-economy non-job - that comes with next to zero benefits: no contract, no confirmed earnings and, worst of all, a series of penalties that kick in if you don't toe the line or meet targets.
'Sorry We Missed You' returns us to the same modern Newcastle of 'I, Daniel Blake. You can imagine glancing at the characters from that earlier film in the wing mirror of the gleaming white van that Ricky drives all over the city. It feels like a companion piece to that 2016 film. It's the same world, with a different story, and there are specific ways, too, in which the films talk to each other: the work-world jargon spoken over the blacked-out opening credits; an interest in the drama of graffiti; and a key scene in which a main character is pushed to a dehumanising breaking point in public. What's different is the detail with which Loach and his collaborators examine the effects of work and society on the nuclear family. The film's tragedy is that no amount of love and goodwill can save us when the cards are so horribly stacked against us.
And that title, Sorry We Missed You' of course it's the faux-friendly message left on doorsteps everywhere by parcel delivery firms. But here it also nods to the left behind, to the overlooked, to the forgotten. Loach and his team, including the writer Paul Laverty, demonstrated a new urgency in their work with 2016's 'I, Daniel Blake. You can feel it again with this powerful, bleak film that feels acutely of the moment but also carries within it the same question that Loach has been asking for more than 50 years: does life really have to be like this.

Ricky has set up a 'job' as basically a self-employed, zero hours parcel delivery driver. Abbie is a carer struggling to travel by bus from client to client.
Added to which you bring two children into the equation with their delinquent problems you have an utterly depressing film.
Loach is lauded by far to many clever clog film critics for my liking. I have enjoyed a couple of his films notably 'Kes' and the little known 'Looks and Smiles' but on the whole his left-wing political films paint a bleak picture of the U.K.

With the central theme remaining rooted to an extramarital affair, director Mudassar Aziz flirts with the characters significantly by introducing several new ones with or without any objective other than prolonging the proceedings.
Comparisons with the original reveal that the characters in the new one are somewhat shallow and caricatured. Chintu is usually a bundle of nerves, mostly bumbling, unlike Sanjeev Kumar's middle aged Ranjeet Chaddha in the original who called the shots. The women in the film are more liberated and confident, in line with the times. It does manage to raise a few laughs through the length of 135 minutes, considered far too long for the story that drags after midway. Aparshakti Khurrana must be given credit for his comic timing, and for being the perfect foil to Kartik Aryan. Ananya Pandey infuses a certain freshness with her somewhat vulnerable character. I thought Bhumi Pednekar overacted in several shots or tried too hard to demonstrate superior emotive skills. Consequently, Kartik Aryan and she appear mismatched and lack the romantic chemistry that is meant to bring them back to bonding. K K Raina, Navni Parihar and Rajesh Sharma have minute roles and are largely wasted. The film could easily have been shorter by 20 minutes, making it more compelling.

But we need to stop bashing him so much for it if we aren’t gonna bash the others. Bhumi too is the same as she was in toilet, shubh mangal, and bala. Both of them do their job but there was nothing interesting fun or exciting about it. I saw pyaar ka punchnama when it came out and I love that film because it is really funny. And I love diveyandu and karthik from that. So I don’t think I’m gonna hate him like a lot of people in this sub do but I also understand that he is doing the same thing and it’s working for him but I wish I could see him test himself as well. Ananya was bland and boring. She doesn’t have many expressions and is really missing some screen presence. Part of that is her acting but also her poorly written character. Aparshakti also is what he’s been in other movies. The repetitiveness of this genre and these characters is what’s gonna kill it. These aren’t content driven films, they are just masala movies that are less cringe and simple. There’s nothing wrong with this movie, it’s just a plain old Bollywood movie that will leave you with nothing. Czarne Å›wiÄ™ta chambre. 13 grudnia na ekrany polskich kin trafił świąteczny horror, rzadka gatunkowo propozycja na ten specjalny czas, kiedy w kinach konkurują raczej komedie romantyczne i filmy familijne. Czarne święta to remake filmu z 1974 roku, który pozostaje prekursorem takich produkcji jak Halloween czy Krzyk. Fabuła skupia się na losach studentek, które pozostają na terenie kampusu akademickiego tuż przed świętami. Gdy miasteczko staje się już niemal opustoszałe, dziewczyny szykują serię przyjęć. Niestety pewien zamaskowany osobnik rozpoczyna brutalne polowanie na studentki. Riley i jej przyjaciółki muszą stawić mu czoła. Brzmi jak wszystkie najciekawsze horrory młodzieżowe, które już oglądaliście i nie liczcie na to, że Czarne święta czymkolwiek was zaskoczą. Chociaż… właściwie to jednak zaskakują. Fatalną jakością, jakieś nie spodziewalibyśmy się po studiu Blumhouse, które tylko w ostatnich latach dało nam Uciekaj!, nowe Halloween czy serię Noc oczyszczenia. Za reżyserię filmu odpowiada młoda aktorka Sophia Takal, która nie tylko postanowiła odświeżyć doceniony film grozy sprzed lat, ale przede wszystkim wpasować go we współczesne ramy i uczynić komentarzem społecznym do wydarzeń związanych z ruchem #MeToo. Zacna idea, niestety wykonanie znacznie gorsze. Nie jest to bowiem komentarz prowokujący dyskusję, lecz próba nakrzyczenia na mężczyzn za całe zło tego świata. Fabuła pozostaje jedynie pretekstem. Zamiast wyrazistego i zmuszającego do refleksji kina feministycznego otrzymujemy fatalnie napisaną i bardzo jednowymiarową produkcję, w której faceci na każdym kroku krzywdzą kobiety – od agresji słownej, przez wykorzystywanie seksualne po stanowiące główną oś fabularną morderstwa. Cała akcja zresztą rozgrywa się na uczelni, która u podstaw ma szowinistyczne poglądy swojego założyciela. W programie nauczania nie ma kobiecej literatury.  Fatalne, propagandowe dialogi i scenariusz, który bardziej od kreowania akcji skupia się na budowaniu tezy, sprawiają że Czarne święta pozostają filmem męczącym na przestrzeni całego seansu. To jednak nie tylko kwestia złego scenariusza, ale i nieudolnej reżyserii, będącej na pewno po części wynikiem niedoświadczenia reżyserki, ale też twórczego lenistwa – zamiast silić się na autorski język, twórcy kopiują najbardziej wyświechtane schematy, co również pozwala domyślać się, że bardziej od zrealizowania dobrego, trzymającego w napięciu kina, zależało im na społecznej wypowiedzi. Jest więc nudno, zupełnie nie strasznie i nijako. Czarne święta to zupełnie pozbawiony wyrazu i napięcia horror, którego celem w istocie jest nie straszenie i dostarczenie ciekawej rozrywki, lecz nachalny komentarz społeczny. To kino niechlujne i byle jakie w realizacji, fatalne również pod względem scenariusza napisanego pod tezę. Lepiej obejrzeć sobie oryginał. Czarne święta. Pamiętaj, że możesz znaleźć nas, wpisując adres. „Czarne święta” to jeden z tych filmów, które zwyczajnie w świecie miały pecha i nie trafiły w swój czas. Nie ten moment, nie ci odbiorcy, co trzeba. Ciekawe, czy gdyby ów horror miał premierę 4-5 lat później, to obrósłby równie wielkim kultem i popularnością, co jego duchowy następca, czyli „Halloween”. Ale nie ma co gdybać. „Czarne święta” miały swoją premierę 11 października 1974 roku, z budżetem wynoszącym trochę ponad 600 tys. dol. Film okazał się sukcesem finansowym o tyle, że zdołał zarobić 4 mln dol. z kinowej dystrybucji, aczkolwiek jest to nawet jak na lata 70. dość skromna kwota, wskazująca na wąskie grono odbiorców. Fabuła rozgrywa się głównie w żeńskim akademiku, do którego zakrada się tajemniczy mężczyzna, szepcący pod nosem bełkotliwe zdania. Co ciekawe, twórcy postanowili pokazać jego wejście, wykorzystując ujęcia z perspektywy pierwszej osoby. Także późniejsze sceny z nim w roli głównej ukazane zostały z perspektywy pierwszej osoby (ten formalny motyw wykorzystał też lata później John Carpenter w „Halloween”). W tym samym czasie dziewczyny na dole urządziły sobie niewielką imprezę świąteczną. W pewnym momencie odbierają telefon, a w słuchawce słyszą obsceniczny głos szaleńca, który mówi do nich wiązanki obleśnych tekstów. Niedługo później jedna ze studentek, Claire, wraca do swojego pokoju, gdzie tajemniczy „włamywacz” dusi ją za pomocą folii i ukrywa jej ciało na strychu. Przez całą resztę filmu bohaterowie szukają dziewczyny. Nie zdając sobie sprawy z tego, że znajduje się ona praktycznie tuż pod ich nosem. Claire nie będzie jedyną ofiarą włamywacza-mordercy, ale też nie tylko o same trupy w „Czarnych świętach” chodzi. Tym, co wpływa dodatnio na zaangażowanie widza w tę opowieść, jest obserwowanie śledztwa ludzi poszukujących Claire i swoista zabawa w kotka i myszkę z niedającym się łatwo namierzyć mordercą. A fakt, że on sam także ukrywa się na strychu, a więc przez cały film znajduje się w tym samym budynku, co jego ofiary i ludzie go szukający, nadaje fabule dodatkowego smaczku. Jest też coś fascynującego i odświeżającego w samej konstrukcji fabularnej filmu „Czarne święta”. To produkcja, która w swoich czasach próbowała czegoś nowego, mierzyła się z trochę innym podejściem do horrorów. Klasyczne tropy z filmów grozy połączyła z thrillerem i wątkiem kryminalnym. Do tego akcja rozgrywająca się podczas Świąt Bożego Narodzenia też nie była wówczas (i do dziś nie jest) typowym tłem dla strasznego filmu. Z tego wszystkiego na dodatek wykluło się także pewne novum – „Czarne święta” uznawane są bowiem także za pierwszy nowoczesny slasher, czyli film, w którym tajemniczy zabójca poluje i zabija po kolei ludzi. Jak wspominałem wcześniej, rok 1974 był ewidentnie zbyt wczesnym momentem, by łączyć w ten sposób fantazje seksualne związane z młodymi dziewczynami oraz przemocą. Ten motyw w pełni wybrzmiał zresztą w „Halloween”, który miał swoją premierę cztery lata później i sprawił, że slashery stały się jednym z najpopularniejszych podgatunków filmowych XX wieku. Kolejne horrory korzystały zresztą nie tylko z motywu zabójcy polującego na młodych ludzi, ale i z tego, że zabójca z „Black Christmas” wykonywał swoje niepokojące telefony po tym, jak kogoś zamordował. Mamy tu więc połączenie pewnej wykonywanej czynności, która jest powiązana z rytuałem mordu. W przyszłości zobaczymy ewolucję tego pomysłu do filmu, po którego obejrzeniu jego widz zostaje zabity („Krąg”), czy wiadomości głosowe na telefon, w których odbiorca dostaje informacje o szczegółach swojej śmierci („Nieodebrane połączenie”). W „Czarnych świętach” fascynuje to, że ze względu na przecieranie szlaków w motywach slasherowych, udaje mu się zgrabnie łączyć je z umiejętnym budowaniem napięcia, a nawet do pewnego stopnia stanowić trochę pokrętną metaforę antyaborcyjną. Wyraźnie wybrzmiewają też w tym filmie wątki szowinizmu mężczyzn względem kobiet. Filmowe dziewczyny nie tylko żyją w strachu przed dzwoniącym do nich zboczeńcem, a także czyhającym na ich życie psychopatą, ale też muszą zmagać się z innymi mężczyznami w ich życiu, którzy roszczą sobie prawa do kontroli, chociażby mentalnej, nad nimi. Oczywiście te wątki absolutnie nie przysłaniają głównej akcji filmu – są zręcznie rozpisane i wplecione w opowieść, bez potrzeby sięgania po łopatologiczne frazesy i puste sekwencje. „Czarne święta” to horror wierzący w inteligencję widza – dzisiejsze Hollywood mogłoby się od niego wiele uczyć pod tym względem. Jakby tego jeszcze było mało, „Czarne święta” to slasher, który przez cały seans nie ujawnia nam tego, jak wygląda i kim jest główny antagonista. Nawet, gdy możemy się domyślać tego, kto nim jest, film nie mówi nam tego wprost i zostawia z tą tajemnicą już na zawsze. A to już bardzo rzadkie w horrorach w ogóle. Sprawia to, że morderca staje się symbolem, krwawy welon tajemnicy dodaje mu tylko złowieszczego charakteru. Oczywiście późniejsze horrory młodzieżowe wybrały już bardziej dosłowną modyfikację tego motywu – przedstawiając nam całą galerię dziś już kultowych zabójców, takich jak Michael Myers z serii „Halloween”, Freddie Kruger z „Koszmaru z ulicy Wiązów” czy Jason z „Piątku trzynastego”. Z „Czarnych świąt” została jedynie utajona bądź niedosłowna tożsamość antagonistów, natomiast rozwijająca się kultura obrazkowa zaczęła wymagać od filmowców tego, by pokazywali wygląd mordercy. I zapewne w tym należy doszukiwać się fenomenu późniejszych slasherów – masowy widz nie lubi zbyt wiele tajemnicy, potrzebuje więcej dosłowności. Tym niemniej, nikt nie zabierze „Czarnym świętom” ich zasłużonego miejsca w historii horrorów, jak i ich wpływu na współczesne straszaki, od „Halloween” po „Piłę” czy „Obecność”. Jeśli jednak myśleliście, że oto w końcu nadszedł grudzień i jesteście już bezpieczni, nic bardziej mylnego; pod choinką czyha na Was ostatnia, najgorsza strzyga, a imię jej... Sophia Takal. Takal albowiem nie napisała po prostu kiepskiego i niestrasznego horroru, popełniła znacznie większą zbrodnię – postanowiła przekuć tak bardzo popularny ostatnio ruch #MeToo w film fabularny, robiąc to tak nieudolnie, nachalnie i obrazoburczo, że wytrwanie stuminutowego seansu Czarnych świąt  staje się heroicznym wyczynem. Nim przejdziemy dalej, postawmy sprawę jasno; nie ma nic złego w ruchach feministycznych ani w promowaniu kobiet, nie ma nic złego w podkreślaniu ich siły, inteligencji i odwagi, ale istnieje cienka granica pomiędzy zrobionym dobrze feministycznym kinem o silnych bohaterkach, a tępą, nachalną propagandą, która na każdym kroku obraża widza i traktuje go jak idiotę. Maszkara, którą stworzyła Takal, wygląda tak, jakby reżyserka obejrzała Grindhouse: Death Proof, zrozumiała wszystko na opak i próbując nieudolnie skopiować niektóre użyte tam przez Quentina Tarantino rozwiązania, potknęła się, wylała kawę na scenariusz, po czym zleciła przepisanie go ślepej sekretarce, która nie znała angielskiego. Efekt końcowy przypomina destylat postów z najgorszych zakamarków Twittera połączony z manifestem social mediowej bojowniczki, która podlała swój film filozofią #MeToo za pomocą cysterny. Nie wiem pod wpływem jakich środków odurzających był Jason Blum, szef wytwórni Blumhouse, gdy czytał scenariusz Black Christmas, dając zielone światło na zmarnowanie 5 milionów dolarów, by został on sfilmowany, ale coś mi mówi, że żałuje tej decyzji. W Czarnych świętach nie gra dosłownie nic, ani poszczególne elementy rzemiosła, ani ich połączenie tworzące obraz. Tempo jest ślamazarne, napięcie nie istnieje, praca kamery jak i sama reżyseria trąci amatorszczyzną, a sceny strachu (tak zwane jumpscares) są tak oczywiste, że brakuje tylko pojawiających się w rogu ekranu cyfr, odliczających do momentu pojawienia się nagłego, głośnego dźwięku, lub teleportującego się znikąd mordercy. Ten jest z kolei tak nudny, sztampowy i pozbawiony jakiejkolwiek charyzmy, że wygląda, jakby powstał przy użyciu internetowego generatora zabójców w maskach. A jeśli ktoś liczy chociażby na poprawny slasher, nie dostanie nawet tego; Czarne święta są uzbrojone w kategorię PG-13 i nie boją się jej użyć. Zamiast krwi, mamy więc wytłumaczoną (poniekąd) fabularnie czarną maź, zamiast porządnych scen śmierci mamy szybki odjazd kamery lub cięcie przechodzące w nową scenę zaraz przed ciosem, tak jakby twórczynie poza wbijaniem młotkiem do głowy widza swojej ideologii nie były nawet minimalnie zainteresowane aspektami horroru. Ich głównym zadaniem wydaje się więc serwowanie dialogów o supremacji męskiej rasy i wiecznie krzywdzonych przez nią kobietach, które oczywiście są pod każdym względem lepsze, bo facet to przecież zwykła świnia. Ilość tej wylewającej się z ekranu niechęci i uprzedzenia do mężczyzn potrafi zmęczyć, a to nie tylko dialogi i one-linery, są nawet antymęskie cytaty poprzedzające film, taka swoista kropka nad i od autorki. Patrząc na anonimową obsadę, można by pomyśleć, że Czarne święta to komedia, wszak występuje w niej paradujący niegdyś w rajtuzach Robin Hood, Cary Elwes, tyle że nie jest ona ani trochę śmieszna, nawet w ten zły sposób. Zastanawia tylko obecność Imogen Poots, która potrafi grać i naprawdę nie widzę powodów, dla których miałaby psuć sobie CV takim gniotem, chyba że desperacko potrzebowała gotówki. Same bohaterki są zaś tak przerysowane, że aż śmieszne, a w świecie filmu każda męska postać to stereotypowy mizogin, gwałciciel i szuja, tak bardzo karykaturalna w epatowaniu męskością, że wywołuje politowanie; w jednej ze scen jeden z głównych antagonistów tak teatralnie mocno żuje gumę, że prawdopodobnie złamał sobie szczękę. Z każdego dialogu wylewają się feministyczne hasła podkręcone w intensywności do końca skali dziesiętnej, zupełnie jakby twórczyni filmu naprawdę wierzyła w to, że mężczyźni istnieją tylko po to, by upadlać kobiety, wykorzystywać je seksualnie, dorzucając pigułki gwałtu do drinków i potajemnie rządzić światem za pomocą sekt i tajemnych rytuałów. A skoro o nich – zapewne oglądając trailer, widzieliście scenę, w której bohaterki po zabiciu napastnika, zdejmują mu maskę, pod którą widać głowę figury z marmuru? Nie dajcie się nabrać na to ordynarne oszustwo, mające na celu przyciągnięcie do kina widza, skuszonego tym tajemniczym, nadprzyrodzonym twistem fabularnym; w filmie nigdzie nie znajdziecie tego momentu ze zwiastuna, ani też żadnego fantastycznego marmurowego mordercy. To nie jest spoiler, a jeśli po tym, co przeczytaliście dotąd, jakimś cudem nadal macie ochotę wybrać się na Black Christmas, wiedzcie, że faktyczny twist filmu jest tak idiotyczny, obraźliwy i absurdalny, że lepiej przywiążcie sobie dłonie do foteli kinowych, bo te automatycznie i z impetem wylądują na Waszych czołach. Gdybym w tym momencie opisał tu finał filmu, zapewne 99, 9% czytających tę recenzję z konsternacją na twarzy zastanawiałaby się, czy to żart, upewniając się, czy dziś aby nie pierwszy kwietnia. Oglądając film, wygląda to identycznie, z tą różnicą, że ani przecieranie oczu ani potrząsanie głową nie powoduje, że odgrywane na ekranie sceny stają się iluzją. Świadomość, że ktoś to napisał, nakręcił i puścił do światowej dystrybucji tylko potęguje potężne uczucie zawodu i żenady. Czarne Święta nie mają nic, absolutnie nic na swoją obronę i nawet z dziennikarskiego obowiązku, ani dla oddania choćby części sprawiedliwości nie mogę przyznać mu punktów ani plusów; to obrażająca inteligencję i dobry smak bełkotliwa papka, więc jeśli szukacie dobrego horroru na Święta, te czarne na pewno nim nie są i trzymajcie się od nich z daleka, chyba że jesteście fanami masochizmu. The cinematography wasn't impressive. The dialogue was over the top preachy. I am all for strong female characters in films. But the strong in this movie was the most annoying character in the whole movie
Every single male in this movie was painted in a negative light, even the ones who had done nothing wrong. If it had been more subtle on the propoganda and had focused more on the main characters journey to becoming a strong person standing up to the men who wronged her this film would have been far better. Instead the second half is just a massive mess.
This movie is blatantly misandric and I highly recommend never watching it.

When she tells them she’s 34, single, and works in a diner. When she stands in awkward silence, after someone pushes her to admit what she really wants with her life. If she knew, maybe she’d be doing it already. Or maybe not. But either way, the issue isn’t that her meandering path is making others unhappy. After all, none of the married, professional, parenting people she knows seem especially content. Their brilliant six-year-old daughter, Frances (Ramona Edith Williams), is trying to make sense of all the chaos around her: a new baby brother, parents who fight more often, and this strange woman who is suddenly taking her to school and the park all the time. O’Sullivan, who wrote the script, works hard to stay focused within her micro-universe. Sometimes this means the pacing is slow and the suburban-Chicago imagery feels deceptively ordinary. But the memorably empathetic depictions of everyday joys and pain are most often found in the connections between people. So a generic kitchen becomes a crucial meeting place, and a noisy playground suddenly turns into a battleground. That Bridget is lost is never in doubt; that her guideposts are the other women in her life becomes increasingly clear with each misstep and stumbling recovery. He suits her because they’re on the same track, despite the fact that she’s nearly a decade older. But while a lazier script or actor might leave it at that, Lipchitz gets the chance to push Jace into unexpected places. This is clear right away, when a post-party hookup turns graphically intimate in a way rarely seen onscreen. It’s not much of a spoiler to add that Bridget soon discovers she’s pregnant, since the decision she has to make impacts her throughout the movie. What’s more surprising, and gratifying, is the determinedly practical approach to such a controversial subject. We’ve seen lots of movies in which heroines grapple at great length with abortion emotionally, but very few in which they’re allowed to approach it on their own terms with absolutely no judgment. One of those, of course, was 2014’s beloved dramedy “Obvious Child, ” which does cast a long shadow even six years later. “Saint Frances” brings to mind plenty of other festival favorites as well, given that indies about a delayed coming-of-age are hardly uncommon. But if this movie doesn’t stand out for visual or thematic originality, it does make its own quiet case through consistently empathetic self-assurance. Bridget’s approach to an unplanned pregnancy is part of her story, but it doesn’t define her, and it’s to the filmmakers’ credit that they do everything they can to expand our heavily-reinforced cultural assumptions. This does make the exceptions stand out, like the designated villains who feel particularly cartoonish as they berate Maya for breastfeeding in public or belittle Bridget for taking care of other people’s children. But every one of the little-known leads is ideally cast, and fully committed. O’Sullivan cuts Bridget’s relatable vulnerability with a realistically selfish edge, Lipchitz upends their seemingly unbalanced relationship, and Alvarez deserves a raft of offers based on her moving portrayal of a silently overwhelmed mother. The acknowledged star, however, is Williams. A 6-year-old figure skater and pageant winner, she is the essence of wide-eyed precocity and given plenty of room to prove it. It’s hard to know yet whether she has an unusually natural and charismatic onscreen presence or a rare talent. But she is an undeniable charmer, even when required to solemnly deliver such adult-written lines as “Every woman’s body is different. ” Then again, she’s not wrong. So, too, is every woman’s experience. And “Saint Frances” never forgets it. Surely, Saint Frances embraces post-abortion effects in a way that no other movie has ever done before. It also shows that parenthood is an extremely hard, outoging process while highlighting the mental struggles of both embracing your place in the world while showing the world to a little fellow-human. And undeniably, it does it all… A warm comedy full of charm, humor, and fun. But more centrally, Saint Frances is an ode to the female experience in 2019. While the film wholly succeeds as a female-empowering hug, it is too artificially compiled as a checklist of statements that need to be said that it never really comes together as a believable film. Almost every event or conflict in the film feels deliberate or staged rather than organic, culminating in a rigidly pc idealist crowd-pleaser full of “wouldn’t that be nice” moments.
